Description
UNITED STATES PATENT 'OEEICE. t
lSAAo LAED, oF ASHLEY, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN IVIOWING-VIACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 4,@59, dated November 20, 1846.
T o all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ISAAC LARD, of Ashley, ill the county ot'Pike and State of Missouri, have invented a new alid useful Machine for Cutting Grass, which is ,described as follows, reference heilig had to the annexed dra-wings of the same, making part of tllis specification.
Figure lis a top view of the machine. Fig. 2 is a vertical section. Fig. 3 is a plan ofthe curved rod for hearing the grass from the scythes. v l
AThis machine consists of a suitable frame, A, of an ohlongform, colnposed of horizontal, vertical, and cross timbers, mortised and tenoned together, and supported upon all axle, B, by two cart-wheels, U C', one of them, C', having on its side next the frame a large cogwheel, D, which meshes into a small pinion, B, placed upon and turning' with a horizontal shaft, F, on the end of which there is a vertical bevel-wheel, Gr, which meshes into a horizontal pinion,-H, onthe upper end of a vertical hanging shalt, I, turning ill suitable boxes ill the frame, on which there is a pulley, K, for a hand, L, that lends around another pulley, M, on the hanging shaft N of the revolving rake 0, designedto take the grass from the cutters P, that radi-.ite frolil a circular block, wheel, or huh, Q, fixed on the lowerend of the hanging shaft I first named, said huh heilig iliade of cast-iron and grooved to receive the cuttel'sP, which are made of cast-steel, of the bill-hook shape, and inserted into saidgrooves, and made fast with screws or other mealls. In front of the cutters is arranged a curved bar of iroll, l, iliade fast to the frame, for the purpose of hearing oil' the grass from the cutters, so that.
:is the latter revolve they shall cut the grass more eff'ectually, having a link or har of iroli, S, extending vertically upward from it to the frame, by which it is raised orlowered to suit thel kind of grass to be ont. One of the cart wheels, C', has points ill its circumference for preventing slipping oli the grolind. The frame is provided with sides alid shafts, by which the Whole machine is moved forward. v
Operation: The animal to draw themaehine,
beilig geared tothe machine between the shafts T, is driven forward. The spurs or points ill the periphery ot' the propelling or cart wheel C take hold of the ground and canse it to turn, and also the cog-wheel D, affixed to the side thereof', which cog-wheel D meshes into the pinion E,.causing it to turn with the cog-wheel G upon it, alid said cog-wheel G meshes into the cog-wheel H upon the upper end of the shaft I, causing the shaft I to revolve, and with it the huh Q and cutters 1?,which cut the grass.` While this operation is going on a revolving rake is made to receive a horizontal revolving motioli, andto take the grass fronltlie cutters and depositit in windrows bymeansof a hand, L, and pulleys M and N. The guard It bears the grass oft' from thecutters, as stated above, causing it to assume a propel' position for being cut down etfectually.
What I claim as nly invention, alld desire to secure hy Letters Patent, is-
1. The arrangement of the revolving rake for taking the grass from the scytlies as fast as cut alid depositing it in the rear, in comblnalioll with the revolving scythes, arranged and operated in the manlier alid for the purpose above set forth.
2. The arrangement of the curved bar lfor bearing off the heads of the grass to enable the cutters to eut the grass more ei'ectuallhv, in combination'with the frame, as set forth.
ISAAQ` LARI). Witnesses: W iu. I. ELLIOTT,
ALBERT E. H. JOHNSON.
