METHOD OF PRODUCING LETTERS OR DESIGNS IN RELIEF SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 485 608, dated November 8, 1892. Application filed June 11, 1892. Serial No. 436.302: (No model.) Patented in England August 31, 1891, N0.14,682.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MoIoNJAMEsDoU GLAS CARTER, of Honor Oak Park, London, in the county of Surrey, England, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Producing Letters or Designs in Relief, (for which I have obtained a patent in Great Britain, No. 14,682, bearing date August 31, 1891,) of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved process for producing letters or designs in open or filagree relief on any suitable surface or background, either for the purpose of decoration or advertisement, the object being to produce rapidly and cheaply such letters or designs in such a manner that the surface or background appears through the open or filagree work of the said letters or designs.
In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1 and 2 are Views in plan and longitudinal section of a show-card constructed according to my invention, and Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the die used in carrying out my method.
In the drawings, A is the lettering or design, and B the background. The sheet of composition having been laid on the die, a fiat plate, preferably of metal, is laid on the sheet of composition and pressed down onto the die by a press or rollers to cut out the letters or design. The plate is then removed and the waste composition in the spaces not forming part of the letters or designs is removed from the die. The parts left in the die are then coated with glue or other suitable adhesive material by means of a roller or brush and the tablet, plate, or background to receive the letters or design is placed on the surface of the die and is subjected to a slight pressure. The tablet, plate, or background is then lifted from the face of the die, bringing away from it the composition, letters, or design fixed to its surface.
It will be understood that the die illustrated byFig. 3 of theaccompanyingdrawings may be used even when the nature of the composition and the surface of the tablet, plate, or background are such that they will adhere to one another; but the letters or designs would require to be pressed out by means of a plate and the waste composition removed from the die before the tablet, plate, or background intended to receive the letters or design was placed on the die to receive the said letters or design, which process involves a Waste of time.
I do not limit myself to the use of anv particular composition, as any composition such as is already used in producing moldings in relief will answer the purpose; but the one which I find produces the best result is composed of whitening, thirtysix parts; glue, twelve parts; resin, eight parts, and oil, eight parts.
I wish it to be understood that my improved process is suitable for producing any design in open or filagree relief, and that such designs can be formed on the surface of any substance or material, whether flat or curved.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The herein-described method of forming letters or designs, consisting in taking a sheet of plastic material, cutting the letters or designs therefrom by means of a die, removing the waste material from the die, coating the remaining portions while still in the die with adhesive material, and applying the tablet or surface to receive the letters to the portions so coated, and thus transferring them from the die to said surface, thereby fixing them permanently to the tablet, substantially as described.
