CANCELING AND DATING STAMP.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 485,472, dated November 1, 1892.

To all whom it may concern,.-

Be it known that I, WILLIAM G. MosELEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grain Valley, in the county ot` Jackson and State of Mlssouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Canceling and Dating Stamps, of which thefollowing is so full, clear, and exact a description as will enable others skilled in the art to lwhich my invention ap-v pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in whicht Figure l is a perspective view of myinveutlon. Fig. 2 is a vertical section showing the position of the levers and their action upon the type. Fig. 3 is a vertical section showing the position of `the pivot a', on which thelevers operate, the swinging partitions h', and the set-screw C. Fig. 4 is adetail perspective showing slight changes in the construction. Fig. 5 is a cross-section of the device shown in Fig. 4.

The object of my invention is to provide a hand postage-stamp canceling and dating stamp in which the type may readily and quickly be removed and replaced without in any way injuring the type and without soiling the operators fingers. It isawell-known fact that the canceling and dating stamps soon accumulate more or less gum and ink after being used awhile, and in cold weather especially it is diflicult to get the pieces of type out to change dates, hours, and years, months, dac. The type in the stamps now in use is placed in the end of the stamp, where it is held by a clamp-screw, and the face of the type is about i'lush with the border ring at the end ot' the stamp. After awhile, however, the type becomes gummy and sticky, and in cold weather especially this gum and ink are sources of great annoyance and disadvantage, and at such time it is so ditlicult to remove thetype that much time is lost, the type is more or less battered and injured, and the operators fingers are more or less soiled by the operation.

The device which is made the subject of this application is designed to obviate these defects and consequent disadvantage; and it further consists in providing the stamp with levers, the free ends of which lie normally within and between the line of the projecting -fingers of the operator.

In the accompanying drawings, A designates the stamp proper, which is provided with a ring B and a recessed portion C for the reception of the type. I provide the stamp With movable removers or plungers, as levers D D, having handles E E and pivoted within the stamp in such a position as to form aseat for the type when the same are in position for use, and atthe same time serve asa means of removing or forcing out the type when it is desired to make any change in the matter in the stamp. This form of lever is shown as one means of operating; but they may be replaced by other equivalents without departing from the spirit ot' my invention. A

thu rnb-screw F, located at a, serves as a means Y offholding the type in place in the stamp. The stamp may be made of anysuitable material and of any suitable size audit isadapted for use with any style of type or canceling devices or characters of this kind.

In the form shown in Figs. 4 and 5 the levers are pivoted at their inner ends, and they are bent at d and are provided with heads e, upon which the thumb or nger may be .pressed to force them down and shove the type out. By using this special form of lever the upper outer end or head is normally close to the side of the stamp and out of the way, especially as shown in Fig. 5, in which the heads are shown in the recess at junction of handle proper and the recessed end of the stamp. The partitions are lpivoted on pins and serve to keep the type apart and straight at all times.

Having described preferred means for carrying my invention into practice, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent, and what I therefore claim, is-

1. In a stamp of the character described, the main portion provided with a recess and pivoted levers for dislodging the characters IDO the main portion provided with a recess and movable pivotally-supported partitions and pivoted levers for dislodging the characters of the stamp, and a set-screw for tightening the characters of the stamp, substantially as described.
