REFLECTOR FOR WATER-GAG ES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 485,451, dat d, November 1, 1892.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EZRA O. CARLETON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Port Huron, in the county of St. Clair and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Reflector-Shields for Water- Tubes; and I do hereby declarethe following to be a full, clear, and exact description of said invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a shield or reflector for water-tube gages, in which the height of the water in the boiler or other receptacle is indicated by the water-level as shown by the water-tube, and is designed especially as an advertising medium, while at the same time performing its mechanical function.
The object of my invention is to provide a reflector or shield fora water-tube which can be readily attached to the tube and gotten up at a trifling expense and having instead of the usual numerical scale the name of a firm or other matter, the letters of which are arranged in a column and at equal distances apart to occupy exactly the position which the numerals would have, it being the purpose to distribute gratis the reflector to those having to do with boilers and other devices requiring indicating-tubes, so that while the reflector is performing its ordinary function the name or other matter expressed by the arrangement of the letters will be thoroughly advertised.
The invention therefore consists, primarily, in the novel application of letters on a reflector for water-tubes, arranged in the form of a column, so as to expressa name, sentence, or other matter when read from top to bottom, or vice versa; and the invention further consists in the construction of reflector with the spring retaining-arms by which it can be readily applied to the tube.
In the accompanying drawings, in which my invention is fully illustrated, Figure 1 is a view in front elevation of the reflectorshield, and Fig. 2 is a front view of the re flector applied to a water-tube. v
Referring to the drawings, the shield A is preferably made of thin sheet metal and in half-round form. This may be enameled white or any suitable color to form a background on which the name or other matteris arranged in high contrast therewith, so as to be readily seen through the water. The letters which are below the water-level are, by the magnifying qualities of the cylindrical body of water inclosed in the tube, enlarged so that the level or height of the Water, which is often difficult to determine, is known to be between the small and the magnified letter,
or up to the highest enlarged letter, which is 7 made readily visible under nearly all circumstances. The curved sheet of metal is provided at both top and bottom with spring retaining-wires B, which are made into semicircular form, but having the ends flared out so that they can be readily sprung on the tube and hold the shield in its. place. behind the water-tube 0. In the drawings the water D is represented as reaching the letter O, the water-line being seen ataglance to be at this point from the enlarged size of the topmost letter reached by the water.
Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Asa new article of manufacture, a shield or reflector consisting of a curved strip of sheet metal and the curved wire-frames at its top and bottom, around which is bent the upper and lower edge of said strip, said wires projecting out and flared to form the spring retaining-arms for holding the shield in place, substantially as set forth.
