Description
Litch of Michigan, have invented a new and -Im' proved Machine for Gutting Hoops; and I dohereby .declarecthat the following is a full,
AUNITin) STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB DOBBINS, vF IJITCHFIELD, MICHlG-AN.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 48,535; dated July 4, 1865.
fr To'ali 'whom itmzuly concern:
B e :it `known .that I, JACOB Donnnvs, of eld,in the county of Hillsdale and State 4clearfand exact description thereof, which will enable othersskilled ink the art to makeand use tile same, reference being. had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specilication,"in which- A. t i Figure 1,Sheet No. l,is a side sectionalview of my invention, taken in the line mx, Fig. 2
Fig.2, a' transverse vertical section of the same, taken in the line y y, Fig. l; Fig. 3, Sheet No. 2, aplan or top View of thesamc; F1g.4,a detached plan or top view of the guides which properly direct the hoops astheyare sawed to the rollers which bend them; I
Similar letters of `reference indicate like parts.' v
This invention relates to anew and improved machine for cutting hoops for barrels, casks, &c.; and it consists in themployment or use of two circular knives, arranged with guides and rollers, as hereinafter set forth, whereby the work maybe vdone rapidly and in a perfect manner. j Y
A represents a framing, which may be 'constructed in any proper manner to support the Working part, and B is a driving-shaft placed thereon, having y upon it a'toothed wheel. C, -which gears in to' corresponding wheels D D on shafts E E', which are also placed on the framing A. The shaft E-v has a circular knife, G,
oblique `position relatively with the knife G,
as shown clearly in Fig. 2.
4 The roller H is at one side of the knives Gr K, and is directly over a bed, L, ,oir which guides M M are placed.` Theseguides l'iavea.`
spiral position, and are designed to turn the hoops as they are cut from the bolt by the knives and present the hoops tlatwise underneath the roller H, as will be fully understood by referring to Fig. 4.
'At the rear side of theroller H there are a series of smaller rollers, N, which are placed in the arc of a circle, as shownclearlyin Fig. 1.
0 represents a series of rollers, on which the bolt from which the hoops are cut is fed to the knives, said rollers being at or in thel upper part of a trough,P,at the side of the framing,I and having a flange, a, at one end.l The knives rotate in thedirection indicated by the arrows in Fig. 1, and two hoops are cutfrom the boltsimultaneously, the hoop cut Aby the first knife being guided and turned over llatwise the guide M, while the hoop cut by the second knife is guided and turned over by the guide M. These hoops pass between the rollers H and N,
Vand are curved or bent in circular form there'- by. In consequence of having the knife K'in an oblique position relatively `with the knife G, the 4hoops will be cut in beveled form to suit thebilge of tliecask or barrel.
l Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The rotating kn'ves Gr K and guides M M', in combination wi the rollers H. N for bending the hoops as they are cut, all substantially as 'and for the purposes set forth.
' JACOB DOBBINS. Witnesses: v
