UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.

IROQNING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 484,925, dated October 25, 1892.
' Application filed May 1, 1891. Serial No. 391,261. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIS H. WATSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark,in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ironing-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to overcome certain difficultie's heretofore en countered in ironing-machines of this class and to secure better results.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which letters of reference indicate the several parts where they occur, Figure 1 represents in perspective a machine embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the upper left-end portion of the machine, and Fig. 3 is a central vertical trans Verse section through the machine. Fig. 4 is a detail of one of the bearings of the lower or padded roll in section.
The supporting-frame of the machine consists of the legs a and a bracket 19 secured thereto and on which the working parts are mainly mounted. Said bracket is firmly secured by means of suitable bolts 0r fastenings to said legs at or near each end and upon an incline, as indicated in the drawings, and is provided with three bearings or boxes 0, d, and 6, one at each end and another at or near the center, in which the upper or heated roll f is mounted, the lower or padded roll g being mounted in movable bearings h and h, the latter working upon a pivot, as will be understood upon reference to the drawings.
To the upper part of the bracket b, at the rear thereof, is pivotally secured a bell-crank k, which is connected with the said bearing h by a rod Z and with the treadle-shaft by a rod j, so that when pressure is brought upon the treadle 2', which is rigidly secured to the treadle-shaft in operating the machine, the said padded roll will be forced into engagement with the heated roll, and when such pressure is withdrawn the said padded or lower roll will separate from the upper or heated roll by the force of gravitation, as will be readily understood upon reference to the drawings. It will be seen that the swinging box h is supported or mounted in the lower end of a bracket 0, the upper end thereof being secured firmly to the bracket 6, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. Beneath said rolls is arranged a table m, which is curved outward at the bottom and extends upward and back of said rolls to receive and protect the garment from being soiled by contact with the machine and to prevent it from dropping on the floor. Said table is supported by a bracket 'n, secured to the frame, as indicated in the drawings. The ironing-rolls are connected by a train of gears and pinions and are operated in the usual manner.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. In an ironing-machine, the combination of a lower movable roller mounted in a pivoted hearing at one end and at or near the center of its length journaled in a swinging bearing or box It, a bracket 0, attached at one end to the top of the frame or bracket 1) and extending downward and outward therefrom and in front of said box h, the latter being supported by said bracket 0 by means of a pivot, and a stationary upper roller f, mounted in journal-boxes upon the bracket 12 of the machine and operating as described, and for the purpose stated.
2. In combination, the legs, the bracket secured to said legs at or near each end, bearings located at the center and near the ends of said bracket, the heated roller mounted in said bearings, the padded roller mounted in movable bearings, and means, substantially as described, for operating said movable roller.
3. The ironing-machine herein described, combining therein the legs a, the bracket b, secured to said legs at or near each end, the
boxes or bearings located at or near the cen- In testimony that I claim the foregoing I ter and at the ends of said bracket, the roll have hereunto set my hand this 28th day of f, mounted in said bearings, the roll g, mount- April, 1891.
