SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 483,994, dated October 11 1892. I

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM IV. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ashland Centre, in the county of Newaygo and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Plow, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to plows; and it has for its object to provide a wheel attachment that can be connected to the beam of ordinary plows and which is so arranged with relation to said beam and the mold-board of the plow that the wheel will always travel in the furrow, thereby always traveling over a com paratively-smooth surface, and thereby effectually steadying and guiding the plow in its movement, thus avoiding all the serious objections to having the plow-wheel bumping over the turned earth and causing a sudden jerk and strain upon the team and creating considerable friction, which is otherwise overcome by the use of. my improved wheel attachment, which may also serve the function of a carrier for the plow when desired to take it from one portion of the field to the other. With these and many other objects in view, which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is fully understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated, and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a plow provided with a wheel attachment constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section through the beam of the plow and the wheel attachment looking rearwardly.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, A represents a plow of ordinary construction, having the mold-board and rearwardly-extending handles all of the usual type, and also with the upwardly-curved and forwardly-extending beam B, having a side groove and colter O secured to said beam and extending directly to the point of the plow. A bearing arm or standard D is adapted to be secured to one side of said beam, directly forward of said colter and move in said side groove, said arm or standard being provided with a longitudinal adjustment-slot E, taking over the securing-screw F, passing therethrough and into the beam of the plow, thus providing means whereby a ready vertical adjustment of said standard or arm may be had. The lower end of said arm terminates in a horn zontal bearing G directly under the beam of the plow and accommodating the extended stationary axle H, the inner end of which is secured within said bearing by means of the set-screw I passing therethrough and engag ing said axle. The said stationary axle extends while the plow is in operation upon the right or mold-board side of the plow out beyond the farthest edge of the mold-board and carries upon said extreme outer end the wheel J, which on account of the extended disposition of the axle carryingthe same al ways travels in the adjacent furrow, thus allowing the point of the plow to evenly do its work and at the same time steadying and guiding the movement of the same, as will be readily apparent.
WVhen it is desired to move the plow from field to field or from one portion of the field to another, the said stationary axle is slid through the bearing directly under the beam until the wheel has reached the point near the same, which thus allows the operator to raise the plow and wheel the same to the desired point.
The operation and advantages of the hereindescribed wheel attachment are thought to be otherwise apparent.
