Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES W. BEEHLER, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR OF TWO-THIRDS TO ALBERT KUEHNE AND FRANK HAUSPERGER, OF SAME PLACE.
BOX-FASTEN ER.
SPCIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 483,953, dated October 4, 1892.
Application led J une '7, 1892. Serial No. 435,872. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, CHARLES W. BEEHLER, of the city of St. Louis, iu the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Box-Fasteners, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being hadto the accompanyingdrawings, forming part of this specification.
My present invention relates to an improved form of box-fastener; and it consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
Figure lis a detail viewshowing the inside of the lid of the box with the spring-catch applied. Fig. 2 is a detail view of one edge of the box, showing the hook which engages the spring-catch. Fig. 3 is a detail vertical Section taken on line III III, Fig. 4. Fig. 4 is a similar view taken on line IV IV, Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a detail side view. Figs. 6, 7, and 8 are detail views showinga modification of the manner of applying the seal,'Fig. 8 being a section on line VIII VIII, Fig. 6.
Referring to the drawings. l represents part of thebox,and2 part of the lid. Sisaspringcatch made from a single piece of Wire having a loop formed at one end and secured to the inner side of the lid, the loop or free end of the spring playing in the staple 4. The lid has a recess 5to receive the upper end of the hook when the cover is applied.
6 represents a hook secured to the inside of the box in a position to engage the catch 3. The upper end of the hook is made inclined, as shown at 7, Fig. 3, so that as the lid is closed the spring-catch will be automatically moved back until it reaches the shoulder of the catch, when it will spring into engagement with the shoulder. The hook is secured to the box by means of astaple 8,which 4o has a loop or bulge 8a formed on it for receiving one end of the seal.
. 9 represents a seal, which when the lid is put on the box is applied to the end of the catch and is passed through the loop or bulge formed on the staple, as shown clearlyin Figs.
4 and 5, thus preventing the catch from being disengaged from t-he hook Without breaking the seal.
In the form of the invention shownin Figs. 5o 6, 7, and 8 the hook and catch are made in the same manner as in the other form; but the seal is applied by forming a perforation 10 in the lid over the end of the hook and by forming a perforation 1l in the hook. The 55 seal is passed through the perforation of the hook,up through the hole llin the cover, and through the outer end of the catch, thus holding the catch into engagement with the hook and preventing the disengagement of the 6o catch without removing the seal.
` A box-fastener thus formed is cheap, easily applied, and durable. I
I claim as my invention- In a box-fastener, the combination of a spring-catch provided with a loop at one end and a stationary catch secured to the body of the box, said catch being secured to the box by means of a staple provided with aloop or bulge and a seal adapted to be applied to 7c the loop of the spring-catch and the staple, substantially as set forth.
CHARLES W. BEEI-ILER.
In presence ot'- ALBERT M. EBERsoLE, J. M. MARor.
