Be it known that we, WILLIAM F. BossERT, of Utica, and JOHN II. FINDLAY, of Ogdens` burg, New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Securing Devices for Cables; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertaius to 1o make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and gures of reference marked thereon, which form part of this speciication.

Our invention relates to securing devices I5 more particularly intended for use with supports for electric-light lamps.

Figure 1 shows in perspective our securing devices with the front portion of the case removed. Fig. 2 shows an inside view of the plate removed from Fig. 1. Fig. 34 shows in z 5 perspective a portion of the mechanism shown in Fig. l on about a quarter-turn from kthe position in which it is shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 shows a .lever-key used in connection with the device.

Referring more particularly to the reference letters and numerals marked on the drawings in a more specific description of the device, 1 indicates a rope or guy, which may eX- tend to the short arm of a pivoted lamp-hanger arm or which may extend over suitable pulleys and support an electric lamp directly wit-hout the intervention of an arm at some -point in the street or other place where it is desired to locate the lamp. which is of suitable length to allow the passage of the 'latch 10, including the downwardly-extending projection 11 thereon. The latch 10 is provided with notch 12, in which it is engaged by pawl or catch 13, which pawl or catch 13 is journaled at one side in an opening in body 4 of the device and in the other side in opening 14 in the cover portion 5 of the device. Y

15 is a spring provided for holding the pawl 6c 13 down and in engagement with latch 10. Latch 13 is also provided with an irregular opening, as 16, adapted to receive a correspondingly-formed portion 17 of key 1S, and is also preferably provided with a projecting ear 19, adapted to strike against the upper portion of the case and prevent the pawl from being operated further than necessary and reduce the liability to injure the spring 15. The latch 10 is contained within depressions 7o a b, contained partially in each of the body portions of the case 4 and the cover portion 5, and the shank or handle of the latch-piece projects through an opening between the end of the walls c d on each portion of the casing. It will be observed that the tension of the pawl 13 on the top of the latch 10 when in its open or partiallysopen position causes the latch to run true in its ways. The upper end of the holder' 2 is provided with hood or bell 8o 20, which overhangs the upper end of the barrel 3 and protects it from the weather,besides furnishing other advantages hereinafter mentioned.

The operation of the device is substantially as follows: The operator, coming to the device with a hook in his hand attached to -the cord 8, snaps the same into loop 6 and, taking 9 5 firmly hold of the cord, draws the holder 2 down until the shoulder n thereon comes in contact with the upper edge of the latch 10, and, having at the same time that he attached the hook 7 inserted the portion 17 of key 1S roo.

in the opening 16, he turns the lever of the key down and, at the same time inserting his thumb through the openingS in the latchpiece when the pawl is disengaged, draws the latchpiece into position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. The holder is then disengaged, and by paying out the cord 8 through the barrel 3 of the device the lamp hangerarm or lamp, as the case may be, is allowed to descend. When it is desired to bring the lamp again into its elevated position, the cord 8 is drawn in until the holder 2 enters the barrel 3, and the bell-top 2O engages the upper end of the barrel, in which position the downward movement of the holder 2 is arrested in such position that the opening 9 will register with the latch 10, and the latch may be shoved into position to secure piece 2, and when this is done the pawl 13 engages notch 12 and secures the latch. The piece 2 is then allowed to ascend until the shoulder o thereof engages on the lower surface of the latch, when the snap 7 and the key 1S may be removed, and the device is left secure.

One of the principal advantages to which it is desired to call attention is that the snap 7 must be securely engaged with the piece 2, and the operator must have drawn down and taken the weight before the device can be unscrewed, thus avoiding all liability to drop the lamp, and, again, the engagement of the piece 11 with the piece 2 when in secured position and the inclosure of the loop 6 within the barrel 3 makes the device secure from wrong-doers.

It is evident that numerous modifications and changes in and from lthe construction shown may be made without departing from the equivalents of our construction.

What we claim as new, and desire to secure by LettersP-atent, is-

. l. The combination, in asecuring device, of

a stationary body having a vertical barrel, a holder to which a guy or supporting-cable is attached, adapted to enter the barrel as a sleeve, and a latch for engaging the holder, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination, in a securing device, of a stationary vertical barrel, a holder to which a guy or supporting-cable is attached, adapted to enter the barrel as a sleeve, a latch for engaging the holder, and a catch for engaging the latch, substantially as set forth.

3. The combination, in a securing device, of a barrel, a holder to which a guy or supporting-cable may be attached and adapted to enter the barrel, and a latch for engaging the holder, having a downwardly-extending projection adapted to engage the holder, whereby the latch cannot be drawn until the holder is drawn down, substantially as set forth.

4. The combination, in a cable or guy supporting device, of the barrel 3, the holder 2, and the latch lO, having projection 11, substantially as set forth.

5. The combination, on a cable or guy securing device, of the fixed barrel, a holder adapted to enter the barrel and having a loop or eye at its lower end for receiving a snap or hook, a latch adapted to engage the holder, and a pawl or catch for engaging the latch, substantially as set forth.

6. The combination, in a cable or guy securing device, of a fixed vertical barrel, a holder adapted to enter the barrel as a sleeve, having hood adapted to engage and cover the upper end of the barrel, and a lockfor securing the holder, substantially as set forth.

7. The combination, in a cable or guy securing device, of a fixed barrel 3, a holder 2, a latch 10, having projection 11, and pawl or catch 13, substantially as set forth.

8. The combination, in a cable or guy se-l curing device, of a vertical fixed barrel 3, a holder 2, having loop 6, a latch 10, having projection 11, and catch 13, having a keyhole, substantially as set forth.

9. The combination, in a cable or guy securing device, of a casing forming a vertical barrel 3, a holder 2, adapted to run in the bar' rel and adapted to be secured to the rope or guy and having an opening 9 and loop 6, a latch 10, having projection 11, and catch 13, having a keyhole, substantially as set forth.

10. The combination, in a cable or guy securing device, of a casing forming a vertical barrel 3, a holder 2, adapted to be secured to y the cable or guy and to enter the barrel and having an opening 9 and loop 6 and hood 20, a latch 10, having projection 11, and catch 13, having a keyhole, substantially as set forth.y .In witness whereof we have affixed our signatures in presence of two Witnesses.
