MOTHER-OF-PEARL ARTICLES AND PROCESS OF MAKING THE SAME.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 482,548, dated September 13, 1892.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that we, OTTO C. ECKERT and LOUIS COHEN, of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in IvIother-of-Pearl Articles and in the Process for Making the Same; and we hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

This invention has reference to improvements in articles formed of mother-of-pearl and in the process for making the same.

The object of this invention is to produce a substantial article from alternate strips or lengths of various-colored mother-of-pearl in such a manner that the surface of the article may be cut away in ornamental designs.

The invention consists in the novel features of construction and combination of parts by which an article is formed of strips or lengths of mother-of-pearl without the use of a base, as will be more fully described hereinafter, and pointed out in the claims.

Figure 1 represents a side view of one form of the improved article formed of alternate light and dark strips and ornamented by spiral grooves, between which spiral ridges are left. Fig. 2 represents an enlarged butt-end view of the same. Fig. 3 represents an enlarged cross-sectional view of an article ornamented as shown in Fig. 1.

Similar numbers of reference designate corresponding parts throughout.

In the ordinary method of making striped articles from mothenof-pearl a base of wood or other similar material is first formed of substantially the proposed shape of the finished article, and to this base are cemented thin strips of mother-of-pearl cutto the proper shape, the cutting away of the outer pearl surface being impossible, as the base would be exposed by so doing.

In carrying out our invention we talze a number of diiferent lengths 5 and 6 of difierent-colored mother-of-pearl and shape two longitudinal surfaces of each strip so that when placed together the joints will extend outward radially from a common center. We next secure these prepared surfaces together by cement, Varying the arrangement of the colors to suit the fancy, and finally ornament the outer surface of the article thus formed by cutting away portions of the same. It 1s apparent that by this improved construction the article may be cut away even to the center without exposing any material except the pearl, of which the whole article is formed.

The article shown in the drawings is adapted for pen or pencil holder extension; but it is evident that this construction is applicable to a large variety of articles. The lengths 5 and 6 may be formed of short pieces joined together, if desired.

Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The process for constructing mother-ofpearl articles herein described, consisting in forming a number of lengths having longitudinal angular surfaces, next securing these lengths together on these angular surfaces, and finally ornamenting the outer surface of the article by cutting away portions of the same, as described.

2. A pearl article formed of a number of segmental strips or lengths secured together on their radial surfaces, as described.
