NUT AND BOLT LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 482,472, dated September 13, 1892.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be itknown that I, THOMAS A. FLANIGAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nut and Bolt Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention,such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved means forlockingnuts to theirbolts; and it consists in certain details of construction and combination of parts, as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved nut-lock, which is constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same having the cap removed therefrom. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the cap used to prevent the locking-bolt from becoming loose. Fig. 4 is a side elevation, partly in section, of the locking-bolt. Fig. 5 is a rearperspective view of a modified form of the locking-cap, in which small projecting portions are shown, adapted to be placed over the rear face of the nut to prevent the cap from becoming detached from the said nut.
To construct a n ut-lockin g device in accordance with my invention, I provide a nut 2 and form at suitable points two grooves 3, each extending from the front to the rear of the said nut. One side of the nut 2 is provided with a circular-threaded opening extending through the same, and in which is placed a small tap-bolt 5, having a sharpened point 4:, formed by concaving the same. This bolt 5 when screwed tightly against the large bolt 1 to be looked the same will be prevented from turning. To prevent this small tap-bolt from becoming loose, I provide a cap 7, adapted to fit neatly about two sides of the head of the said bolt, and having bent edges 8, which engage with the grooves 3 formed in the sides of the bolt 2. This cap is placed in position by moving the same endwise over the head of the bolt 5, and held in position bya cotterpin 6, passed through the cap 7 at the back of the head of the bolt 5; or a cap, such as shown at Fig. 5 on the drawings, may be used and the end projecting pieces 9 placed or bent over the rear side of the nut 2.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patcut, is
A nut-locking device, substantially as described, consisting of a nut having a threaded orifice through one side of the same, a tap-bolt adapted to project through said orifice and lock said nut, a cap adapted to be bent over the head of the said tap-bolt to prevent the same from turning, means for holding said cap in position, and means to prevent the cap from slipping off endwise of said nut, all arranged and combined for service substantially as and for the purpose described.
