- application nea nach 2, 1892. sarai 110.426.736. 'on modem' To, all whom, t may concern.:
Be it known that I, CHJLRLES T. citizenof the United States, gheny, in the count-y of Allegheny and State haveinvented a certain new and useful'lmprovementin Journal-Boxes, of which the following is a' full, clear, and exact description.
The object of this invention is to make a or axle box for cars, which may be iuterchanged with the master car builders when necessary. 'The process of making such boxes and the machinery ltherefor will form subjects of future applications for Letters I Patent, and hencethisspecilicatjon is confined to the article as an article.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention, in the several gures of which zo ,like parts aresimlarly designated, Figui'el is wardly-projectinglug 'a top plan and half-section. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a rear viewand half-section, and Fig. 4 is a vertical longitudinal section. f
Y 'lhe cover c may be a casting, malleable or otherwise, drop forging, or of pressed steel; but for the purposes of this case I will describe it-as a' casting, and as such it is made saith parallel transverse lugs b to receive the 3o arch bar of the truck;
also, with lateral eyes b to receivethe connecting bolt or bolts; also, with the lug c to receive a usuallid d; also, withAa-slotted projection e for the insertion of the dust-guard f; also, with thc downg, and also with a. groove h in its under side to receive the upper edges of the pressed-steel body c' of the box, such -body being united with the cover by riveting' or otherwise fastening it to the 4olugs g. VThe bodyrl is formed of a single 5o to receive apartition-plate q to form the I piece of soit-steel plate or other wrought metal bent to shapeand otherwise manipulated and treated. It is provided with the parallel llugs or projecting ribs j for the lower arch bnr, the
parallel side lugs oe' projecting ribs 7c for the fastening Aboltor bolts, a front lip l fo'rtlre lid, and a rear wall m, having the opening for the axle' nib or journal n. .Lateral shoulders o and a'bottom groove p are made in the body SonoEN, a residing at Alle-` and 4iv :standard --of cast iron boxes?? 482.200, dated September 6, 1892.
boxL-for thedust-guard f1 Both the rearwall m of the body and t-he partition q-are let into grooves-in the cover-,as clearlyshownin Figs;
r is the brass or tion, held in place/by the lugs s, from the cover, and also lby the key j, which in turn is kept in place by the lifigz'zaalso depending from the cover; buto courseI do not limit my invention to these details, inasmuch as my invention consists, journal-box having its body of l'pressed steel or like wrought metal and a separate top.
By the construction of box herein described it is possible to interchange withv cast-iron boxes ot' the master car-builders standard, and hence my, bo'xes are .availablein replacing useless boxes on rolling-stock already built. tage of these boxes is that there is a saving of upward of nearly four hundred pounds ofA deadwveight in the eight boxes of a car.
1. A journal-box comprising an independently-constructed top of suitable material and formation, combined with a body of'wrought metal, such as pressed steel, made separate from the top and composed of sides,"bottom, a rcar'wall, and a front lip made integral and fitted and secured to such top, substantially as described. l.
2. Ajoui il-box comprising a tophavin'g a groove in .s under side and-downwardlyprojectin'g lugs, combined with a body struck up from wrought metal, having its edges ftbearing of usual :construe-l .55 depending Another and very important advanted in said grooves and fastened'to said ljugs,
:su bstantiall y as described.
Inv a-journal-box,-awrought-metal body provided with lateral shoulders o and a. b ottom groove j), combined with a. partition-plate q, fitted thcrein,to separate olf or form in the rear of the box a compartment for the reception of thc dust-guard, substantially as described.
`In testimony whereof I havey hereunto set my hand this 23d day of March, A. I). i892.
