UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
ELROY N. HEATH, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
PACKAGE-CARRIER FOR VELOCIPEDES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 479,069, dated Jiuly 19, 1892. Application filed August 15| 1891- Serial No. 402,731- (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern.l
Be it known that I, ELROY N. HEATH, of Boston, county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Velocipede Package-Carriers, ofwvhich the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings,is a specification, like letters on the d rawin gs representing like parts.
Riders of velocipedes, bicycles, and the like frequently desire to carry bundles, packages, &c.
The object of this invention is to provide a package-carrier which may be easily carried and used, if desired.
My improved package-carrier resembles a hammock, and I have devised hammock-suspending devices by which it may be readily swung from the handle-bar or some other suitable part of the machine. I have shown the suspending devices as clamps adapted to be clamped on the handle-bar, and preferably the part of the clamp next to the handle-bar will be covered or lined to prevent marring the handle-bar. A
The Whole contrivance may when detached be carried in the pocket of the rider.
My invention consists in the combination, with the handle-bar and hammock-supporting clamps and their bolts, of a hook and a hammock.
Figure l in elevation shows a sufficient portion of avelocipede or bicycle with my parcelcarrier attached to enable my invention to be understood. Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of the suspending device and part of the handle-bar; Fig. 3, a like View with a hook of a different shape; Fig. 4, a like view showing the hammock-cord as applied directly to the suspending device Without the intervention of a hook.
Fig. 5 is a section looking to the left of the dotted line no, the hammock being omitted; and Fig. 6, a modification to be described.
Referring to the drawings, let A represent the pivot-post, and B the handle-bar, of any usual velocipede or bicycle.
In 'accordance with myinvention as herein embodied I have applied to the handle-bar suspending devices C, made as clamps and ladapted to surround and be clamped on the handle-bar by a bolt a, extended through ears c c of the clamp. Preferably to avoid marring the handle-bar the clamp or suspending device will be lined or protected at the inner side next the bar with a split ring of nonmetallic material, asindia-rubber or leather, as at b. The bolt a may serve to support a suitable hook d, to which the head cord c of the hammock f may be attached, as in Figs. 1 and 2. The hook may be made as a snap, as at g, Fig. 3, or the hook may be entirely dispensed with, the bolt a being extended through the looped end of the cord e, as in Fig. 4, or the bolt may be provided with a hook, as in the modification Fig. 6.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
The bar B and the hammock-supporting clamps and their bolts, combined with ahook and a hammock, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ELROY N. HEATH.
