FRANK ARTHUR DAMON, OF FITOHBURG, MASSACHUSETTS.
DENTAL ENGINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 478,992, dated July 19, 1892.
Application filed April 6,1892- Serial No. 428,013. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK ARTHUR DAMON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fitch burg, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Dental Engines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
A main object of this invention is to proyide means for readily controlling the starting and stopping, and also the speed and the direction of rotation of dental engines. Other objects are the improvement of the swiveled column and its support of the power-shafting.
I will describe the principle of my invention first and the best mode I have contemplated of applying that principle, and then will particularly point out and distinctly claim the part or improvement which I claim as my invention.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention, in the several figures of which like parts are similarly designated, Figure 1 is a front elevation showing parts of the column and its support and the friction-gearing in section and the rock-shaft broken out to economize space on the drawings. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is aplan taken in the plane of line so m, Fig. 2. Fig. iis a section on line y y, Fig. 2, of part of the friction-gearing on a larger scale. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the joint of the column, and Fig. 6 is a detail of the column-adj usting clamp.
The frame a, water-motor b, water-supply pipe 0, and exhaust-pipe 61 may be as usual. The horizontal motor-shaft c has affixed to it a vertical disk f, the center of which is concave or hollowed out at f for a purpose presently appearing. Above and below the motor are the respective brackets g and h, and to these brackets are secured the upright rods 'i, on which a forked carrier is arranged to be slid up and down. This carrier is so moved by a connecting-rod k, descending to an arm k of arock-shaft 10 which rock-shaft is supported in standards k k and has a pedal is, so that the engine itself maybe arranged upon one side of a dentists operating-chair and the power appliance extended to the operators side of the chair. It is obvious that by rocking the rock-shaft the carrier may be caused to move up and down upon theguiderods 1'. The brackets g and h sustain a short vertical shaft 1, which is rotatable therein, and this shaft has applied to it a horizontal friction-wheel m, preferably supplied with a rubber rim m. This friction-wheel when at rest comes next the concave f of the disk f, and when moved above or below that concave its rim is in frictional contact with the face of the disk and is rotated by said disk as the latteris rotated by the motor. In order to transmit the rotary mot-ion of the motor through the disk and friction-wheel to the shaft Z and at the same time admit of the friction-wheel being moved'up and down to vary its relation to the friction-disk, I connect the said friction-wheel and shaft by a key m on the wheel fittingagroove or slot-Z in the shaft, as seen in Fig. 4; or other usual means tothis end may be employed. The diskfand friction- Wheel m constitute what isherein referred to as a friction-gearing. Now it is obvious that so long as the friction-wheel is adjacent to the concave f it receives no motion from the disk f, and that when said friction-wheel is moved into contact with the friction-disk above said concave it (the said friction-wheel) will be driven in one direction and with a speed varying with its nearness to the center of the disk, and that as said friction-wheel is moved below the said concave it (the said friction-wheel) will be driven in a reverse direction and with a speed varying with its relative distance from the center of the disk, so that by means of this friction-gearing, immediately and instantly controllable by the operator, the powertransmitting shafting may be driven in either direction and with varying speed and stopped at pleasure.
On the bracket 9 is arranged a vertical tubular socket g, and in this socket is arranged the tubular column 71, so as to be capable of rotation on a vertical axis. of this column is provided withayoke n, and this yoke has jointed to ita yokeo of the horizontal arm 0. This horizontal arm is adj ustably connected to the column by a bracevp, which is fixed to a bracket p on the column at and jointed to the arm by a clamping split collar or sleeve 1", (see Figs. 1 and 6,) so that the angle of elevation of the arm may be varied to meet the requirements of the operator.
The power-transmitting shaft 8 is set in a The top socket s in the shaft Z (see Figs. 1 and 3) or is otherwise connected with it so as to be rotated thereby. This shaft .9 is stayed and centered in the tubular column by means of washers of leather or other material, suitably lubricated. The horizontal arm has the power transmitting shaft 2 similarly supported by like washers t in the said arm and connected to the shaft .9 by a flexibleeonneetion 25 as usual. The shafttis provided with any approved tool-holding arrangement.
I do not limit my invention to the use of a water-motor; neither do I restrict it to the preeise means shown for moving the carrier or shifting the friction-Wheel. By this arrangement of rock-shaft and connections with the friction-gearing-shifting device it is possible to arrange the engine on one side of the operating-chair out of the dentists way and the patients sight and to have the pedal on the dentists side of the chair and Within his convenient reach.
hat I claim is- 1. In a dental engine,a motor andapowertransmitting shaft, combined with a frictiongearing composed'of a disk having a concave portion and a friction-wheel having contact with said disk, excepting at its concave portion, and means to move said friction-wheel across the faces of said disk while in contact therewith to obtain motion in either of two directions and atvarying speed and also to move it opposite such concave portion to stop the machine, substantially as described.
2. In a dental engine, a motor and a powertransmitting shaft, combined with a frictiondisk on the end of the motor-shaft having a concave portion, a short vertical shaft connected with the power-transmitting shaft, a friction-wheel connected wit-h said short shaft to turn it and movable longitudinally thereof, a pedal, and connections between the pedal and friction-wheel, whereby said frictionwheel is adapted to be moved up and down said shaft to effect an engagement with and disengagementfrom the friction-disk and thereby to change the direction of rotation, vary the speed, and stop the machine, substantially as described.
3. In a dental engine, a frame, a motorsupported thereby, a vertical friction-disk arranged on the motor-shaft and having a concave portion, brackets projecting from said frame and containing vertical guide-rods, a carrier arranged upon said guide-rods, means to move it longitudinally thereof, and a vertical short shaft supported in said brackets, combined with a friction-Wheel arranged to slide on said short shaft and to turn it and movable into and out of engagement with the friction-disk by its said carrier, substantially as and for the purpose described.
4. In a dental engine, a motor and a powertransmitting shaft, combined with intermediate gearing, and a rock-shaft for controlling such gearing, having a pedal at one side of the operators chair and extending across to the other side thereof, substantially as described.
5. In a dental engine, the column or standard, combined with the power-transmitting shaft, and washers to support it in the said column or standard, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set
