MERRY-GO-ROUND.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 478,838, dated July 12, 1892.

To all whom it may concern.-

' Be it known that 1, WILLIAM D. BENNAGE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Merry-Go-Rounds, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.

My invention consists of a merry-go-round formed of a standard having a circular rack thereon,a beam having a seat thereon, and a shaft journaled in hangers on said beam and provided with a pinion meshing with said rack, parallel hangers rigidly connected with said beam and having segmental slots therein, arms with their ends adjustably secured in said slots, a sprocket-wheel journaled in said arms and provided with pedals, and a sprocketchain on said wheel and on a sprocket-wheel on the shaft, the said beam being rotatable on the standard.

Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a merry-go-round embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a face view of a portion of the device on an enlarged scale.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.

Referring to the drawings, A designates the standard or post, which is supported in upright position in any suitable manner and has thereon near its upper end a circular rack or toothed rim B, with which mesh the pinions O, rotatably secured to the shafts D, whose bearings at their inner ends are in the hangers E, depending from the beams or arms F. The said arms radiate from a hub G, rotatably supported on the upper part of the standard A and suitably strengthened by the braces H. To the outer ends of the beams F are secured seats J, such as the figures of horses or other animals,- chariots, 850.; but it is evident that the figures of other animals or objects or the forms of seats may be substituted for those shown.

The outer ends of the shafts D have bearings in the hanger K, which are secured to the arms F and are provided with sprocket-Wheels L. Rigidly secured to each of the armsF near its outer end are two parallel hangers M, each having a segmental slot N therein, and adj ustably secured in said slots are the arms P, the outer ends of which furnish bearings for the shaft Q of a sprocket-wheel R, which is connected bya sprocket-chain S with the sprocketwheel L. on, are secured to the shaft Q, so as to rotate the same. By adjustably securing the arms P in the segmental slots N of the hangers M the pedals U can be adjusted to and from the seats J, and thereby accommodate difierent lengths of limbs of persons operating the device.

WVhile I show four arms in the drawings, each of which maysupport a figure or object, such as J, it is evident that the number of arms and figures or objects maybe increased or decreased, as desired.

The operation is as follows: The rider occupies the figures or objects J and operates the arms T, whereby, owing to the gearing, the shafts D are rotated. This communicates motion to the pinions G, and as the rack B is stationary the said pinions ride around on the same, carrying with them the arms F, whereby the objects or figures and occupants thereof are also carried around, it being seen that said occupants or riders thus furnish the power by which the movable portion of the merry-go-round is operated. If desired, the arms may be substituted by a platform, as in merry-go-rounds heretofore in use. It will be seen that the parallel hangers M, being rigidly secured to the arms F, furnish a solid or firm support' for the inner ends of the arms P and require no adjusting on the said arms F in the adjustment of the sprocket-wheel R.

The device may be placed in a room or on a lawn, porch, &c., and made large or small, as desired.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A merry-go-round consisting of a standard with a circular rack thereon, a beam rotatable on said standard and having a seat thereon, a shaft journaled in hangers on said beam and having a pinion thereon meshing with said rack, two parallel hangers rigidly secured to said beam and having segmental slots, arms having their ends adj ustably secured in said slots, a sprocket-wheel journaled in the other end of said arms and having pedals thereon, and a sprocket-chain on said wheel and on a sprocket-wheel mounted on the said shaft, said parts being combined substantially as described.
