Be it known that I, MATTHEW LEAHY, of New Haven, in the county of New I'Iaven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Cash Indicators and Recorders; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact descripxo tion of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-

My invention relates to an improvement in zo cash indicators and recorders, the object being to produce ata low costasimple, durable, and accurate device which cannot be operated surreptitiously without leaving a record of such operation.
lVith these ends in view my invention consists in a guard virtuallyinterposed between the locking mechanism of the money-drawer and the type-wheel, and preventing the depressionof the operating-lever for opening 3o the said drawer, except when the type on the wheel and the printing mechanism are in right relation for making a record of the opening of the drawer.
My invention further consists in certain de- 3 5 tails of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
As herein shown, the guard consists of a vertically-movable pin A, having its upper 4o end beveled, playing in an opening formed in the frame I3, and having its lower end necked for its connection with the inner end of the operating-lever C through a longitudinal slot 4 C formed therein. The said guard is designed to co-operate with a circular series of guard-openings formed in the type-wheel D, and respectively located in line with each of the type members D on the periphery thereof. The said guard-openings may be constructed of different forms; but as herein shown they consist in slots E, having beveled sides and entering the rizn of the wheel from its rear edge. It will be observed by reference to Fig. 3 ot' the drawings that there is a considerable space between each of the openings, and that unless tliewvlieel is brought into just the right position when it is stopped the pin or guard A will not enter one of them when the outer end of the lever Cis depressed for unlocking' the locking mechanism of the 6o money-drawer E. The said locking mechanism consists of a horizontal lever If, pivoted in a bracket E', depending` from the body G of the case of the device and havingits outer end hooked for engagement with a strike H, fastened to the rear end of the drawer and project-ing slightly above the upper edge thereof. A heavy spring I, secured to the body G of the case at the extreme inner end thereof, is arranged to engage with the rear 7o end of the drawer and exert a constant effort to throw it open. The said locking mechanism is connected with theoperating-leverbymeans of a vertically-movable pin J, the lower end of which engages with the inner end of the lever F, whileits upper end is provided with a head which is engaged bythe opening-lever at a point j ust in front of the iulcrum K thereof, the said lever being suspended from the front of the frame B, which is preferably made of cast- 8o iron and attached to thetop of the body of the case at the rear end thereof and inclosed by the lower end of the top G of the case. A heavy spiral spring. encircling the upper end of the pin J, is interposed between the head thereof and the upper face ot' the body G of the case and operates to restore the operating-lever to its normal elevated position after operation and to sust-ain it in such position. The said parts are constructed and 9o arranged so that unless the pin A, forming the guard, is entered into one of the guardopenings E the lever C cannot be sufiiciently depressed to disengage the locking-lever F from the strike Il, and thus permit the moneydrawer to be thrown open by the heavy spring I, but will strike the periphery of the wheel at some point between the two adjacent guardopenings lowermost, and thus prevent the money-drawerfrom being opened. The guard :roo is therefore virtually interposed between the type-wheel and the money-drawer. Furthermore, when the operating-lever is permitted by the alignment of the pin or guard A with one of the guard-openings to be suflicientl y depressed to operate the locking mechanism of the money-drawer to unlock the same, it lifts a tape L against that type member D' which is in line with the guard-opening into which the pin or guard A has been entered, so that the tape is printed upon by the type, and a record is made of the depression of the operating-lever and the opening of the money-drawer, the said parts being constructed and arranged so that it is impossible to depress the operating-lever sufficiently to unlock the money-drawer without at the same time pressing the tape against the type member at that time in position for printing.
As herein shown, the tape is wound on two drums M and M', which are jeurnaled in the frame B, before mentioned, the drum M' being provided at its inner end with a ratchetwheel N, the teeth whereof are engaged by the hooked upper end of a pawl O, the lower end whereof is connected with the extreme inner end of the operating-lever, which is thus caused to move the tape every time it is fully operated. Springs P and Q, respectively engaged with the said pawl and ratchetwheel, hold the pawl in position for operation and the wheel from retrograde movement. A vertically-movable presser-block L' is provided with a stem L2, which is mounted in the frame B at a point directly in front of the pin A, the lower end of the said stem passing through the said frame in position to be engaged bythe operating-lever, which is thus made to lift the block and the tape which passes over it against the type presented to the tape by the type-wheel. A small rod R, connected at its upper end with the inner end of the operating-lever, is att-ached at its lower end to a spring-actuated lever S, controlling the action of the hammer T of the bell U, which is thus rung every time the operatinglever is fully depressed.
The type-wheel D may be of any approved construction, and is mounted upon a horizontal axis V in the top G of the case of the device, the outer end of the said axis being furnished with a knob V', by means of which the wheel is operated to bring the numbers on a dial W, attached to its outer face, into line with a iixed indicator IV', the said dial being observed through a glass-covered opening X, formed in the top G' of the case. The numbers on the said dial, it will be understood, correspondin character and in arrangement to the type on the periphery of the wheel, so that, for instance, when the number 45 on the dial is aligned with the indicator W' the type member at that time presented to the tape will correspond. If desired, and as herein shown, a similar dial Y is secured to the back of the type-wheel and exposed through a small opening Y', formed in the back of the top of the case.
As herein shown, the type are inked by a felt pad Z, depending from the hinged lid Gr2 of the said top of the case.
Having fully described the construction of my device, I will now proceed to set forth the mode of its operation. Let it be supposed that a sale amounting to forty-live cents has been made. The clerk grasps the knob V' and turns the type-wheel until the number 45 on the forward dial WV is brought into line with the indicator VT. This done the outer end of the operating-lever C is depressed, causing the pin or guard A to beentered into the guard-opening aligned with it, the tape to be lifted against the type member 45, the money-drawer to be unlocked and thrown open, and the bell to be rung. Change is now made and the money-drawer pushed back into place, when it will be automatically relocked. Just as soon as the outer end of the operating-lever C is released it will be lifted into its normal position again by the action of the spiral spring J', whereby the pin or guard is retracted from the guardopening in the wheel which it was entered into and the wheel left free to be rotated again. It has already been shown that the pin or guard by its virtual iuterposition between the type-wheel and the locking mechanism of the drawer prevents the drawer from being opened without leaving a record on the tape.
It is obvious that in carrying out my invention I may make some changes and alterations in the details herein shown and described. Thus, instead of constructing the type-wheel with slots for receiving the pin or guard, I may construct it with countersunk holes to take their place. I would therefore have it understood that I do not limit myself to the exact construction herein shown and described, but hold myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations therein as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A cash indicator and recorder having a case, a money-drawer located therein, a typewheel, means for operating the same, locking mechanism for the money-drawer, a printing mechanism co-operating with the type on the wheel, and an operating-lever combined with the said locking and printing mechanisms for their actuation, in combination with a guard connected with and actuated by said operating-lever and located in line with the periphery of the said wheel, toward which it is moved by the same, substantially as described, and whereby the guard by striking the periphery of the wheel checks the depression of the operating-lever and prevents the unlocking of the money-drawer except when the wheel and the printing mechanism are in right relations for recording the opening of the drawer.
2. A cash indicator and recorder having a IIO IZO
llltjlte case, a money-drawer located therein, a wheel provided with type and constructed with guard-openings arranged so that one is located in line with each type member, means for operating the said wheel, printing mechanism co-operating with the type on the wheel, locking mechanism for the money-drawer, and an operating-lever combined with said printing and locking mechanisms for simultaneously operating them, in combination witha guard connected with and actuated by the said operating-lever and located in line with the guard-openings in the wheel toward which it is moved by the said lever, substantially as described, and whereby the guard by striking the periphery of the wheel checks the depression of the operating-lever and prevents the unlocking of the money-drawer except when the wheel and the printing mechanism are in right relation for recording the opening of the drawer.
3. A cash indicator and recorder having a case, a money-drawer located therein7 a wheel provided with type and constructed with guard-openings arranged so that one is located in line with each type member, means for operating the wheel, printing mechanism co-operating with the type on the wheel and including a tape, a presser-block for lifting the same against the type, and means for feeding the tape, locking mechanism for the money-drawer, and an operating-lever combin ed with the said printing and d rawer-locking mechanisms for simultaneously operating the same, in combination with a guard connected with and actuated by the operatinglever and located in line with the wheel toward which it is moved thereby, substantially as described, and whereby the guard by striking the periphery of the wheel checks the depression ot the operating-lever and prevents the unlocking of the money-drawer except when the wheel and the printing mechanism are in right relations for recording the opening of the drawer.
4. In a cash indicator and recorder having a case, a moneydrawer located therein, a wheel provided with type and constructed with guard-openings arranged so that one is located in line with each type member, printing mechanism including a tape, a presserblock for lifting the same against the type,
and means for feeding the tape, locking mechanisln for the money-drawer, and an operating-lever having its inner end horizontally slotted and combined with the said locking and printing mechanism for simultaneously operating the same, in combination with a guard having its lower end connected with the operating-lever through the said slot 1n which it plays and located in line with the guard-openings in the periph ery ofthe wheel, substantially as described, and whereby the guard by striking the periphery of the wheel checks the depression of the operating-lever and prevents the unlocking of the moneydrawer except when the wheel and the printing mechanism are in right relations for recording the opening of the drawer.
5. In a cash indicator and recorder having a case comprising a horizontal body and an upright top, a money-drawer located in the said body, a wheel mounted on a horizontal axis in the said top and provided upon its periphery with type and upon one or both of its faces with numbers corresponding thereto and exposed through openings in the said top and constructed with a series of peripheral guard-openings arranged so that one is located in line with each type member, printing mechanism, including a tape, a presserblock for pressing the same against the type, and means for feeding the tape, a drawerlocking mechanism, and a pivotal operatinglever combined with the presser-block of the drawer-locking mechanism and the feeding device of. the printing mechanism and operating the said block and mechanism simultaneously, in combination with a guard consisting of a pin connected at its lower end with the inner end of the said operating-lever and located in line with the guard-openings in the periphery of the wheel, substantially as described, and whereby the guard by striking the periphery of the wheel checks the depression of the operating-lever and prevents the unlocking of the money-drawer except when the wheel and printing mechanism are in right relations for recording the opening of the drawer.
