SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 478,280, dated J' uly 5, 1,892.y -Application led November 27, 1891. Serial No. 413,194. `(No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY GREENWOOD, of Gilbertville, county of VOrcester, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Means for Driving Spindles, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters and figures on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to spinning, doubling, twisting, winding, or other machines employing rotating spindles, the object of the invention being to provide improved ine-ans or devices for driving a series of spindles by a single band, whereby all friction due to rubbing of the band at different points and all lost motion when the direction of rotation is changed may be avoided. l
Figure l represents in front elevation a series of spindles driven in accordance with this invention; Fig. 2, a sectional plan view of the same on line a: Fig. l; and Fig 3, a sectional detail to be referred to.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the frame of a machine of one of the classes above referred to and to which my invention is applied, it having bearings for the rotating driving-cylinder a, about which the usual band or bands are passed which drive the spindles. The several spindles b, of usual form and construction and suitably mounted in the frame A, are each provided with usual whirls b. The end spindles 5 6 of the series are each provided with a second whirl b2, larger in diameter than the whirls b', and preferably arranged below the latter, said whirls b2 being loosely7 journaled about their respective spindles and provided, preferably, with hubs b3, which run in the cup-shaped recesses in the step-collars b4, which latter are driven tightly n pon the spindles, as best represented in Figs. l and 3. The hubs of the whirls b2 are provided with suitable oil-passages bx, which direct the oil to the spindle, the cup-shaped depressions in the step-collars b4 collecting the oil, so that the loose whirls always run smoothly in oil.
The band d, which drives all the spindles of the series, is passed about the cylinder a and the whirls b of the several spindles, as best indicated in Fig. 2. By referring to said figure and starting from the point 10 the band passes about the cylinder, thence by 11 to and about the whirl b on the end spindle 5, returning by 12 to and about the cylinder again, continuing in this manner, as shown, until the end spindle 6 is reached, when the band after passing about the cylinder extends at 13 to and about the loose Whirl bzon said end spindle, thencealong in front of the spindles, as' indicated at 14, 'to and about the loose whirl b2 on the end spindle 5 to the point l0 again. It is clear that rotationof the cylinder in either direction will cause acorresponding uniform rotation of all the spindles of the series, thus insuring a uniform twist, and the loose whirls b2 being larger in diameter than the whirls b prevent the portions of the band at l0 and 1l and l2 and 13 from contacting with' each other tocause friction. The loose or guide whirls b2,being journaled about the end spindles of the series, do not yield and it is not necessary that they should, and so the direction of rotation of the spindles may be instantly changed without causing a variation inthe speed of rotation of some of them, as is common in devices of this class at the present time.
This invention is not limited to the particular construction shown, nor to the application of the invention to any particular class of machine, the gist of the invention lying in providing the end spindles ofthe series with loose or guide whirls for the return band, larger in diameter'than said driving-whirls, the band extending from the driving mechanism around the vdriving-whirls and returning around'the guide-whirls.
I claim- A frame and a driving-cylinder journaled therein, combined with a series of spindles each provided with a driving-whirl, theend spindles of the series having in addition loose guidewhirls larger in diameter than the said driving-whirls, and the endless Vband d, extended around the driving-cylinder and each of said driving-whirls, and returned around the guide-whirls of the end spindles, substantially as described.
