SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 477,073, dated June 14, 1892. Application filed September 28, 1891. Serial No. 407,054. (No model.)

Beit known that I, ALEXANDER ll. SHAM- BAUGH, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Avilla, in the ,county of Noble and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines; and

I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear7 and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to 1o which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to Washing machines, and has for its object to provide a simple and eflicient means for locking a vibrating rubber to the bail on Which it is mounted. I 5 The improvement consists of the novel features and the peculiar construction and combination of the parts, which Will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and

The suds-box A is of well-known construction and arrangement and is supported on 3o the leg-sections B, which are secured to the sides of the said suds-box. The bottom of the suds-box is of sheet-metal, preferably of zinc, and forms a support for the stationary rubber O, which is removably inserted in the suds-box and is held therein by having one end extending beneath a cleat D at one end of the suds-box and a camturn button E at the other end of the said suds-box, which engages With the opposite end of the said rub- 4o ber C. This rubber is composed o'f a series ot' slats F, which are longitudinally ribbed or corrugated on their upper faces and which are constructed to have their edges in abutting relation. Each of the slats is provided with transverse kerfs on both sides near each end to receive the Wires f, Which bind the slats together., Two of these wires f are provided for each end of the rubber, and the slats are bound together by crossing the Wires from one side to the other in front of 5o each slat as the same is bound in. These Wires, being embedded in the slats, citer no projecting joint to engage with and tear the clothing in process of Washing and also hold the several slats in their relative position.

The vibrating rubber G is of usual construction, and its Working face is of corrugated metal and is mounted on a swinging bail Il, so as to adapt itself to the bulk of clothing in the suds-box and be swung back 6o out of the way in the ordinary manner When placing clothes in or removing them from the suds-box. The bail comprises tWo arms h h, which are pivotally connected at their outer ends to the sides of the suds-box, a straight portion h, intermediate of the arms 7L and on which the rubber G is mounted, crank portions 7a2, connecting the ends of the straight portions 7L With the arms 7L, and an extended loop 7a3, which projects for a 7o short distance parallel With one of the handles of the rubber G. The locking-bolt I is mounted on a cross-bar g of the rubber G and is constructed to slide through the handles of the rubber G, contiguous to the extended loop h3 and through an eyec' on the said cross-bar. \Vhen it is desired to lock the rubber G to the bail ll, the bolt I is projected beyond the handle of the said rubberand engaged with the extended loop h3, as shown 8o most clearly in Fig. l.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In a Wasl1ing-n1achine,the combination, 85 with a suds-box and a swinging bail having an extended loop, as h3, of a vibrating rubber mounted on the said bail and a lockingbolt carried by the said rubber and con structed to engage with the said extended 9o loop and lock the rubber and bail together, substantially as set forth.

2.
