SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 477,038, dated June 14, 1892. Application filed November 23, 1891. Serial No. 412,730. (No model.)

To all whom t may concern.-

Be it known that I, YVILLTAM lV. WOOD, of Elbridge, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bank-Notes, ot which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and eX- act description.

My invention relates to improvements in bank and other notes designed to circulate as currency and having thereon characters representing the denomination of the note, the

name of the payer and thepayee, and any other necessary information,` and has for its object the production of a simple and effective construction of note which greatly reduces the time of tellers, cashiers, treasurers, and similar officers required in arranging such notes, with their proper face upward and their corresponding ends one above the other. To this end it consists, essentially, in a note having at its opposite extremities characters for representing the denomination of the note, the name of the payer and payee, the characters at one extremity being arranged inversely to the characters at the opposite extremity, and in the detail construction and arrangement of the parts, all as hereinafter more particularly described, and pointed out in the claims.

In describing this invention reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part ot' this specification, in which like letters indicate corresponding parts in both the views.

Figures l and 2 are similar views of theopposite faces of the note.

It is well known that when receiving or counting paper bills or notes they are each arranged with their front face upward and their corresponding ends one above the other, and' that in banks and similar institutions where vast quantities of such currency is handled a'considerable amount of time is lost in thus arranging the notes. By my invention I arrange at each extremity of the top face of the note characters representing its denomination, the name of the payer and payee, and the character of coin to be paid, and arrange the characters at one extremity inversely to the characters of thc opposite extremity. The back face of the note is pro` vided with corresponding characters arranged similarly to those on the front face, and consequently no arranging of the notes is required, as whichever end is engaged by the operator or placed above the end of the next lower note shows clearly the denomination of the note, the name of the payer and of the payee, and the characters affording such information read from the Vtop downward.

A represents the front face, B the back face, and a b the opposite extremities of the banknote.

The characters C for representing the denomination ot the note may be of desirable form, size, and construction, and, as shown in the drawings, the characters at one eX tremity of each face are arranged inversely to the characters at the other extremity,a separate set ot characters being preferably used for each extremity.`

The characters D for representing the payer and the payee may also be of desirable form, size, andconstruction, and are also arranged at the opposite extremities of the note, the

characters at one extremity being inversely arranged to those at the opposite extremity.

At the opposite extremities of the front face of the note are characters E for representing the kind ot coin by which the note is payable, and, as readily seen, these characters are also arranged inversely one with the other. I also provide at each extremity of the front face and arrange inversely to the other characiers F and G for representing, respectively, the date and number of the note and beneath said characters the words This is only half of note. At the right-hand extremity of the front face of the note are the names of the cashier and president of the bank, or, if the same is a United States Treasury note, the names of the register ot' the Treasury and the treasurer of the United States.

The back tace B is provided at its opposite extremities with corresponding characters C D E F G, arranged in the same manner as on the front face, and also with the words This is only halt of note,7 arranged as on the front face.

Upon reference tothe t'oiegoin g description and drawings it will be noted that each eX- tremity of each face ot' the note corresponds one with the other, with the exception that the characters upon the opposite extremities IOO of each face are arranged inversely and that the signatures are placed only at the right hand of the top face. It will thus be noted that no matter how the note is engaged in handling, providing the same is held length- Wise, it requires no reversal of its faces or ends to enable the ready perception of its denomination, the name of the payer or the payee, and that thereby a great saving in time is occasioned in handling bank-notes.

It will be understood that my invention is not limited to any particular arrangement of the characters upon the note other than that the characters at the opposite extremities be arranged inversely to each other and that otherwise 'the same may be greatly varied without departing from the spirit of my invention.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. As a new article of manufacture, the herein-described bank-note, having at its opposite extremities characters for representing the denomination arranged inversely one with the other, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. As a new article of manufacture, the herein-described note, the same having at its opposite extremities characters for representing the name of the payer and payee, the characters at one extremity being arranged inversely to the characters at the opposite extremity, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

3. As a new article of manufacture, the herein-described bank-note, the same having at the opposite extremities of each of its opposite faces characters representingthe denomination of the note, the name of the payer and payee, said characters at one extremity of one face being arranged inversely to the characters on the opposite extremity of said face, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
