IMPLEMENT FOR ,VENEERING LUMBER. No. 476;782. Patented-June 14, .1892.
II I. I. I
WITNESSES. Ill/VE/VTOR /AW 5 $31M. 664 C%@L /LM P MW ATTORNEY.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM E. BROOK, OF PLAINFIELD, NEIV JERSEY.
IMPLEMENT FOR VENEERING LUMBER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 476,782, dated June 14, 1892. Application filed April 24, 1891. Serial No. 390,248. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. BRooK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Plainfield, in the county of Somerset and State of New J ersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Implements for Veneering Lumber, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an implement for veneering lumber, as hereinafter fully described, whereby I am enabled to apply a sheet of veneer to a surface of plain lumber, molding, or the like having a tongue-and-groove, rabbet, lap, or other similar joint.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a top view of an implement embodying my invention readyto be applied to use. Fig. 2 represents a bottom view thereof. Fig. 3 represents a side elevation thereof. Figs. at and 5 each represent a cross-section of a piece of lumber having the veneer applied thereto.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The letter A indicates two rods, which are of cylindrical form, but have their upper and lower central portions flattened to form a suitable bearing-surface for the nuts B of screw-bolts passing through the rods, together with formers D. The rodsA are of the same length and the bolts are at similar distances from the ends thereof, while they turn loosely in their sockets. The bolts passing through the formersD are secured on their undersurfaces by their heads E. The formers D straddle from one to the other rod A and are flat, except at the ends of their upper surfaces, where theyhave an upward projection, as more clearly shown in Fig. 3, to prevent the sheet of veneer from being injured while it is being applied to the lumber. The outer edges of the formers D are straight, while the inner edges 0 thereof have an outline or configuration to correspond with the edges of the piece of lumber, molding, or the like to which the veneer is to be applied. In this example the inner edgesC of the formers have central longitudinal grooves or recesses d, extending approximately the entire length thereof, with overlapping upper and lower portions 6, which coincide with the edges of the lumber to be veneered. (See Figs. 4 and 5.) The ends of the formers D are made to taper or curve upward and outward from the bottom to the top thereof, like a plowshare, terminating in the upward projections already referred to. 180th ends of the formers D are substantially similar in construction, so they can be moved freely forward and backward over the surface of the veneer when applied to the edges of the lumber, thus forming doubleenders.
In order to facilitate adjustment of the formers D on the edges of the piece of lumber to be veneered,I provide a handle J, which by its proper manipulation opens or closes the rods A, and thereby contracts or expands the formers on the edge of the surface to which the veneer is applied.
Referring to Figs. 4 and 5, P indicates a piece of lumber, and T the veneer which has been applied thereto by my implement.
In some cases the formers D maybe firmly secured to a rod or rods and brought in engagement with the edges of the dressed article by bringing the rod from a transverse to an inclined position in relation to the article.
WVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An implement for veneering lumber, molding, or the like, consisting of rods A, connected with formers D by means of bolts, said formers having theirinner edges adapted to fit the edges of thelumber or other article, substan tiall y as and for thepnrpose described.
2. An implement for veneering lumber, molding, or the like, consisting of rods A, connected with formers D by means of bolts, said formers having their inner edges adapted to fit the edges of the board or other article and the whole provided with a handle for manipulating the same, substantially as and for the purpose described.
