SCRAPER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 476,691, dated June 7, 1892.

Application filed May 19, 1891. Serial No. 393,301. (No model.)

To ail whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. SHUART, of Billings, in the county of Yellowstone and State of Montana, have invented a new and Improved Scraper, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to improvements in scrapers; and the object of my invention is to produce a scraper which may be quickly adjusted, so as to scoop or scrape up any desired amount of earth, which maybe arranged to deliver the earth at any desired point or to strew it evenly over the adjacent land, and which is specially adapted for use in grading land preparatory to irrigation.

To this end my invention consists in certain features of construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter described and claimed.

Reference is to behad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the views.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a scraper embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same.

The frame of the machine consists, essentially, of two parallel runners 10, which are adapted to be drawn upon the ground, and which are connected on their upper sides by

cross-bars

11 and 12, located, respectively, at the front and rear portions of the runners. The runners are provided at their front ends with chains 13, by means of which they may be drawn; but it is obvious that any other suitable means may be provided.

A scraper 14:, which is preferably of metal and is beveled at its lower edge, extends transversely between the runners and is held to move vertically, the said scraper being socured at each end to a V-shaped frame 15, said frame being composed of two members 16, which meet at the forward end of the frame, at which point the frame is pivoted, as shown at 17.

In the center of the front cross-bar 11 is a vertical post 18, which is split at the top, as shown at 19,so as to receive an operating-lever, as described below, and on the rear cross-bar is a post 20, which aligns with the post 18, and in which is a vertical slot- 21, having an offset 21 at the top. The post 20 is provided with a series of transverse perforations 22, adapted to receive a pin 23, by means of which the operating-lever 24 is held in a fixed position. This lever 2a is pivoted at its front end in the split portion of the post 18, and its rear end extends through the slot 21 in the post 20.

The lever 2a is connected near its rearend with the upper edge of the scraper 14 by means of a link 25,the upper end of said link being secured to the lever and the lower end to the scraper. The length of the link is such that when the lever'is raised to its utmost limit, the scraper will be raised from the ground, and to hold the scraper in this position the lever 2% is placed in the offset 21 of the slot 21. By depressing the lever the scraper let may be brought into a desired position, and by thrusting the pin 23 through one of the perforations in the post 22 and through a perforation in the lever, the lever and scraper may be held fixed. It will thus be seen that the scraper may be nicely adjusted, so as to scoop up any desired amount of dirt, and the runners 10 will prevent the dirt from spreading, so that it may be conveniently carried to any desired point. By manipulating the lever the dirt may be gradually allowed to escape from beneath the scraper and may be thus spread evenly upon the surface of the ground. It will be seen that the scraper might be mounted on wheels and fenders substituted for the runners with the same effect; but the form of machine shown is the preferable one, on account of its simplicity.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with the platform having depending sides or runners, front and rear cross-pieces 11 12, vertical standards projecting from said cross-pieces, V-shaped bails or frames pivoted at their bends inside of the forward ends of the runners or sides parallel therewith, a blade 14:, secured at its ends to the diverging ends of said bails, a lever pivoted at its front end to the front upright and adjustably connected near its opposite end with the rear upright, and a link pivotally connecting said lever between its ends with the said blade, substantially as set forth.
