BUTTER-PRINT MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 476,634, dated June 7, 1892.

certain new and useful Improvements in But ter-PrintMachines; andIdo declare thefollowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a side view, partly in section; and Figs. 3, a, and 5 are detail views.
This invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements for stamping and printing butter; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, the letter A designates a base or support, upon which the print box or press I and the print-box-operating mechanism 0 is supported.

To the outer face of each of the side portions a a and the end portion b are secured metallic strips or plates (1, having an arm d at their lower ends. These arms project outwardl y and slightly downwardly from the portion'to which they are secured, and are provided each with a pivot pin or projection b, which loosely engage apertures in lugs e, secured to the base or support, and thereby forming a hinge or pivot connection for said sides and ends.
Between the arms d is secured to each portion a, a, and b an arm f, which extends inwardly and downwardly therefrom, and which at its lower downwardly-bent end f passes through a slot or between two arms g g of a hinge-piece G underneath the bottom stamp. Nuts g are placed in the lower ends of these arms f to prevent their withdrawal from said slots. Around these slots in the upper surface of the hinge-piece Gare formed concave seats or recesses g, which form bearings for lateral rounded projections on the arms f.
The rear end portion of the box or press is secured to a casting H, rearwardly-extending arms h of which have a pivotal connection with lugs h on the base or support. This casting H has an arm H, extending forwardly and between the side portions of the box, and to this arm is removably secured the printblock 0, and to a downward projection i of this arm is secured the hinge-piece G.
Secured to the base or support at the rear of the press is a vertical arm or standard I, on the upper end of which is an enlargement or head I, having a convex upper surface 2'".
J is the operating-lever, to the lower portion of which is secured the bifurcated casting J, the arms j of which extend down, one on either side of the head I of the standard I, and are secured thereto by a pivot-bolt K, which passes loosely through apertures therein and througha horizontal slot 7c in said head, said pivot-bolt havinga free play in said slot longitudinally thereof.
L is a curved arm pivotally secured at its upper end to the lever J and at its lowereud secured to the upper surface of the top portion or press-head C of the press. Springs 6 e are secured at one end to said arm where it is attached to the top 0, and at their other ends are connected to the upper edge of the rear end portion l) or lugs thereon, which are engaged by said top when the top is raised.
Between the arms of the bifurcated casting J is a bearing-piece M, which when the lever is brought forward bears on the convex upper edge i of the standard I, and which, as the said lever approaches the limit of its forward movement, passes into engagement with an oblique or cam slot N in the forward edge of the head I of the standard. As this portion Z) moves forward, the hinge-piece G will be lowered, and by means of their connection with the said hinge-piece, as described, the side portions a a and the end portion 1) will be brought into vertical position to form the box or press, the side portions coming between and resting against shoulders s in the end portions. As the lever is brought farther forward and downward, the bearing-piece M, carried by the casting J, enters the cam-slot N, forcing the pivot-bolt K backward in the slot k and forcing the top 0 down upon the butter to give the required pressure for the stamp and print. As the lever is thrown upward and backward, the hinge-piece G is raised, throwing the parts away from each other and opening the box. By making the printblock bearing the stamp on its upper surface 0 removable different prints may be employed. If desired, the interior surface of all the parts may be pro vided with a print or configuration,giving an impression to all sides of the butter.
Having described this invention, what I claim as new, and desire'to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with a press-box formed of hinged or pivoted ends and sides and a press-head having a yielding connection with one of the ends, of a lever having anoscillating support upon a vertical arm or standard secured to the base, said lever having a connection with the press-head and having bearings on said standard, whereby as it is operated the sides and ends will be operated on their supports to open and close the box, sub stantially as specified.
2. A press-box formed of sides and ends pivotally connected to a base-piece and to a hinge within said base, a press-head having a yielding connection with one of said end pieces, an arm or standard secured to the base at the rear of said end, a lever having a loose connection with said arm and with the presshead, and cam mechanism on the upper end of said arm or standard operating in connection with the lever, the parts being so arranged that the oscillation of said lever opens and closes the press independently of other mechanism, substantially as specified.
3. The combination, with the press-box having the hinged or pivoted ends and sides, the
removable bottom or print-block, and the press-head having springs connected thereto and secured to one end portion, of the lever having the bifurcated casting secured to its lower end and an arm pivoted thereto and secured to the press-head, an arm or standard secured to the base or support and having a rounded head provided with a horizontal and an oblique slot, a pivot-bolt passed loosely through the arms of said bifurcated casting and through said horizontal slot, and a bearing-piece carried by said casting and adapted to engage said oblique slot and the rounded head when the lever is operated, all arranged substantially as and for the purpose described.
