FRED A. PETERS, OF SOIO, MICHIGAN.
'THIMBLE FOR STOVEPIPES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 476,300, dated June 7, 1892.
Application filed February 8. 1892.
Serial No. 420,770. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRED A. PETERS, of Scio, in the county of VVashtenaw and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thimbles for Stovepipes, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
My invention consists in the combination in a thimble, of an interior and exterior cylinder of sheet metal. These two cylinders are united together, leaving an air-space between them, a part or the whole of the interior cylinder being corrugated, so as to form by its corrugations a screw-thread adapted to receive a corresponding screw-like corrugation on the end of the pipe which it is destined to receive, the object being to furnish a cheap thimbleinclosing within itself an airspace to protect any combustible material in the wall through which it passes from fire; also, to provide a suitable screw-thread by means of which the stovepipe may be readily and firmly attached. These objects I attain by the mechanism shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 shows a vertical section of a part of a chimney and wall, also of one of my improved thimbles and a portion of a stovepipc attached to the same. of the parts shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical section showing a modified form of my thjmble as the same would be made when applied to a wall through which it is desired to pass a flue.
In the drawings, Fig. 1, WV represents the wall as usually made of lath and plaster, and 0 one side of a chimney-wall. The thimble consists of a sheet-metal piece, one member of which T forms a flange, which rests against the wall W, as shown in Fig. 1. This sheet metal continues in the form of a cylinder T into the interior of the chimney-flue and at T returns within itself and forms a smaller Fig. 2 is an elevation stovepipe P is corrugated at P, so as to be adapted to be screwed into the corrugations T of the cylinder, the end of the pipe being indicated by the lines P P In the modification shown in Fig. 3 the thimble has the same flange T which rests against the side of the wall W, and the mem' ber T forming the outer cylinder, passes through to the side W of the wall, as shown in Fig. 3, and thence it returns from the point T as an inner cylinder T to the flange T, this inner cylinder being corrugated throughout its length, if desirable; or it may be corrugated from each end inwardly, leaving an inner section cylindrical to correspond with the part T of Fig. 1. The two sections of the pipe that form the flue are represented by P and R, their ends being indicated, respectively, by the lines L L.
I do not wish to confine myself to any particular construction as to method of uniting the parts that constitute this thimble, nor to the thickness of the air-space between the two cylinders.
I claim- In a thimble, the combination of an exterior cylinder with an interior cylinder, the said interior cylinder being provided with corrugations and so located in regard to the outer cylinder that a surrounding airspace is formed between the two said cylinders, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, on this 5th day of February, A. D. 1892.
FRED A. PETERS.
