W. I. LEGGETT. FRUIT JAR FILLER.
N0. 475,874; Patented May 31, 1892.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\VALTER I. LEGGETT, OF GALESBURG, ILLINOIS.
FRU lT-JAR FILLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 475,874, dated May 31, 1892.
Application filed November 17, 1891. Serial No- 41Z,13 l. (Il'o model.)
To aZZ whom, may. concern:
Be it known that I, NVALTER I. LEGGETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Galesburg, in the county of Knox and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fruit-Jar Fillers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a device known as a fruit-jar filler; and it has for its object to provide such devices with means for self-sustaining the same and eifecting a thorough ventilation of the jar, so as to afford a continuous operation without any danger of overflowing or wasting the fruit, and obviating the necessity of handling the device, which becomes very hot by reason of the hot fruit which is placed therein.
The invention will be fully understood from the following description and claims when taken in connection with the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical diametrical sectional View of myimproved device in position upon a fruit-jar, and Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the device removed from the jar.
In carrying out my invention Itake a skelp of sheet metal or other suitable material of a sufficient length and width and form the same into a receiver, as indicated by A. This receiver or body portion, which has the appearance of a truncated cone inverted, has its tapering end provided with a large discharge-aperture a, and its upper edge is preferably wired, as shown at b, and may carrya ring or the like for suspending the device upon a nail on the wall or other suitable support.
B indicates sustainingdegs, which serve the additional function of ventilators. In constructing these legs I take a piece of material, preferably wire, and bend the same from the horizontal branches 0 downwardly and at approximately right angles thereto, as shown at d, thence horizontally in an angular manner, as shown at e, thence upwardly, as shown atf, and so on until a sufficient number of depending loops or legs B are formed, after which I secure the horizontal portions 0, by
means of solder or otherwise, to the outer surface of the body at a sufficient point above the discharge-opening therein, so that said legs will project in the plane below the opening and rest upon the shoulder of a fruit-jar or other article and hold the funnel free from contact with said jar during operation. While I prefer to use wire for this purpose for the sake of cheapness, yet it is obvious that other material might be employed, and
instead of forming such ventilating supports or legs from a single piece a number of pieces might be employed; but I attach importance to the fact that the support is of skeleton form, as by such means the attendant may inspect the jar at its mouth, and thereby become apprised of the time about which the jar will become full. By a device of this construction I am enabled to save a great deal of time in the filling operation, inasmuch as there is no bubbling or overflowing of the juices due to the accumulation of air or gases in the jug, and as the filler is firmly sustained upon the jug it becomes unnecessary for the attendant to handle the hot article for the purpose of staying the same in position, and by the use of wire or other material of a spring or resilient nature it will be seen that the legs will have a clamping or binding action upon the neck of the jar, which will also assist in retaining the filler in proper position.
Having described my invention, what I claim is 1. As an improved article of manufacture, a fruit-jar filler comprising the body of truncated-cone shape having a large dischargeopening and a skeleton support for sustaining said funnel in the mouth of a jug or jar and free from contact therewith, said support being formed from wire bent at intervals in depending angular loops and secured to the body or funnel on its outer side above its discharge-opening so as to clamp the neck of a j ug, substantially as specified.
2. As an improved article of manufacture,
2L fruit-jar filler comprising a body of trun- In testimonywhereoflaffix my signaturein eated-eone shepe, and legs secured thereto presence of two Witnesses. 0n the outer side at a point above the (118- WVALTER L LEGGET'R charge-opening, said legs being spaced so as to expose to View the discharge-opening of WVitnesses:
the funnel during operation and clamp the HARLEY F. DRURY, neck of a jug, substantially as specified. FRANK. H. MILLS.
