WALTER M. LETTS, or SEDALIA, MISSOURI.
SPARK-ARRESTE R ANZD DRAFT-REGU LATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letteis Patent No. 475,579, dated May 24, 1892.
Application filed September 10, 1891. Serial No. 405,280. (No model.) i
To all: whom it may concern:
Missouri, have invented a new and Improved: Spark-Arrester and Draft-Regulator, of which i the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in draft-regulating and spark-arresting attachments for locomotives; and the object of my invention is to produce a device by means of which the locomotive-may be given any necessary amount of draft, and also to construct and arrange these attachments in such a way that the sparks and cinders will be retained in the smoke-box of the locomotive.
To this end my invention consists in certain features of construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a broken vertical section of a locomotive-boiler and smoke-box provided with my attachments. Fig. 2 is a broken sectional plan of the same on the line 2 2 in Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is avertical cross-section on the line 3 3 in Fig. 1.
The boiler-shell 10 is prolonged beyond the fines in the usual way and has at its front end the smoke-box 11, from the top of which the smoke passes out through the stack 12 in the usual way. Bolted or otherwise secured to the shell near the top and in front of the smoke-stack is a partition 13, which fits airtight in the upper portion of the shell and .which extends downward into the smoke-box and is curved rearward at its lower end, so that the lower portion of the partition will be in a nearly horizontal position, as shown at This horizontal portion of the partition fits snugly around the steam'nozzle 15, which is arranged beneath the smoke-stack and connects with the exhaust and direct steam-pipes, as shown in dotted lines at 16, in the usual manner, and this nozzle projects a little above the horizontal portion of the partition. That part of the partition 13 which is in front of the smoke-stack should be far enough forward so that if necessary a com- Be it known that I, WVALTER M. LETTS, off Sedalia, in the county of Pettis and State oft mon form of petticoat-pipe may be placed above the nozzle. The horizontalportion 14E of the partition 13 also fits snugly around the branches 18 of the steam-pipe 17, which pipe projects forward into the smoke-box and con nects with the branch pipes by means of a T 19. The branch pipes project forward and downward and connect with the cylinders in the usual way.
The vertical portions of the branch pipes 18 and the nozzle 15 are made of a substantially triangular shape, with edges toward the fines, as best shown at 20 in Fig. 2, and this construction prevents the cinders from striking the pipes and being forced backward against the fines. A little above the fines in the boiler is a transverse angle-iron 21, which is secured to the flue-sheet 22, and a deflectorplate 23 is secured to the angle-iron and to the sides of the boiler-shell, said deflectorplate extending forward and a little downward into the smoke-box, and a damper-plate 24. is secured to the front portion of the de flector-plate 23, and in order that the damperplate may be adjusted the plate 23 is provided with slots 25, through which extend bolts .26, by means of which the damper-plate is clamped to the deflector-plate, and it will be seen that the damper-plate may be pushed back and forth upon the deflector-plate and held in any desired position.
The side edges of the damper-plate may be secured to angle-irons and adapted to, slide in the same manner. The front edge of the damper-plate is preferably arranged so as to be a little below the rear edge of the horizontal portion 14 of the partition 13, and the draft from the flues and smoke-box is up through the opening between the damperplate and partition and out through the smokestack. Secured to the bottom portion of the boiler-shell at the foot of the flue-sheet 22 is a shield 27, which extends forward into the smoke-box and is upwardly inclined, said shield being fitted snugly around the nozzle 15 and the branch pipes 18, and this shield prevents the cinders from falling back in front of the fiues and interfering with the draft.
Any sized nozzle may be used in connection with the apparatus, and it will be underto the partition, substantially as described.
stood thatthe attachments may be secured to any common form of locomotive. By letting the steam into the nozzle 15 it rushes up through the smoke-stack, thus creating a strong draft, and the arrangement of the deflector-plate and the partition prevents the sparks and cinders from being carried up through the stack, and they will be deposited in the front end of the smokeebox.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1.
1. The combination, with the smoke-box of, a locomotive having a steam-draft nozzle therein, of an imperforate partition arranged in the upper portion of the smoke-box and embracing the nozzle, and a deflector secured to the flue-sheet of the boiler-and extending forward above the fines to a point adjacent? 2. The combination, with the smoke-box of a locomotive, of a rearwardly curved and imperforate partition secured to the upper portion of the smoke-box in front of the stack, a steam draft nozzle extending upwardly through the partition, and an adjustable deflector-plate secured to the flue-sheet of the boiler and extending forward into the smokebox, substantially: as described. l
3. The combination, with the smoke-box of a locomotive having deflector-plates in its up it per portion beneath the stack, of the steampipes and exhaust-nozzle arranged within the box, said pipes and exhaust-nozzle being of angular cross -seotion, substantially as described.
