ATTACHM ENT FOR HARVESTERS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 475,434, dated May 24, 1892.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, PETER H. BOTOF, a resident of Utica, in the county of Clark and State of Indiana,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Harvesters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to an improvement in attachments for harvesters, and more particularly to means for saving grain which is liable to escape during the process of binding, the object of the invention being to provide an improved device adapted to be located under the deck of the binder to receive grain which might escape during the operation of binding and to so construct said device that it shall be susceptible of use upon any binder now in practical use.

A further object is to so construct a device for collecting escaping grain that it may be readily attached to and removed from the machine or emptied when necessary.

lVith these objects in View the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of the attachment. Fig. 2 is a View showing the side bars or rods detached, and Fig. 3 is aviewin end elevation showing the attachment in position on a harvester.

A A represent two side bars or rods, which maybe made of any suitable material and of lengths sufficient to be bolted to some convenient part of the machine and extend somewhat beyond the deck B of the binder. These rods or bars A may be provided at their rear ends with bolt-holes for the reception of bolts, whereby to attach them to any convenient part of the binder-frame, and at points between their ends blocks a and hooks b are attached to these bars or rods, whereby to brace them against the binder-frame. At points along the upper edges of the side bars or rods A pins or buttons 0 are provided for the reception of perforated straps D, which are secured to and project from the ends of a canvas apron E. Any desired number of these straps maybe providedand each ispro- Vided with a series of perforations e, by which they are connected with the pins or buttons 0 on the side bars, there being also a series of these pins or buttons, so that the connection of the straps with the rods or bars may be adjusted as occasion demands.

The apron E extends from one side bar to the other under the binder-deck. The apron is preferably made of such width as to extend somewhat beyond the end of the deck, so that grain escaping from the end of the deck may be caught. Along the inner longitudinal edge of the apron E a series of four (more or less) loops f are secured, in which a corresponding number of straps g, having buckles thereon, are inserted. By means of these straps the inner longitudinal edge of the apron may be connected to any suitable I part of the binder-frame (according to the style of binder used) and this edge elevated to any desired degree, as occasion demands.

By means of this device all the grain which is rattled out during the operation of binding will be saved, and the device may be cheaply made, easily applied to any binder now in use, and is effectual in the performance of the functions for which it is intended.

Slight changes might be made in the details of construction of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof or limiting its scope. Hence I do not wish to limit myself to the precise details of construction herein set forth; but,

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. An attachment for harvesters, consisting of rods or bars adapted to be secured beneath the deck of a harvester, a series of buttons or projections on said rods or bars, an apron between said rods or bars, and straps for connecting the apron with the buttons on the rods or bars, substantially as set forth.

2. An attachment for harvesters, consisting of rods or bars adapted to be secured beneaththe deck of a harvester, an apron, and straps for connecting the apron with the rods or bars, substantially as set forth.
