To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, ARTHUR B. BRUNELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vorcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Oorer, Parer, and Slicer; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which, in connection with the drawings making apart of this specificatiomwill enable others skilled in the art to which my invention belongs to make and use the same.

My invention relates to a combined corer, parer, and slicer made in one piece and formed out of sheet metal, and the object is to improve upon the construct-ion of such implements now in use.

My invention consists in certain novel features of construction of a combined corer, parer, and slicer made in one piece and formed out of sheet metal, as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.

Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of my invention, showing the same in the operation of paring a potato. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the same. Fig. 3 is a side view looking in the direction of arrow a, Fig. 1, and Fig.4 is an enlarged cross-section on line x :r, Fig. 1, looking in the direction of arrow 1), same figure. The potato is not shown in this figure.

In the accompanying drawings, 1 isthe corer, parer, and slicer having the rounded or tubular portion 2, forming the handle, the edges 2 thereof meeting and butting against each other, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4. The body of the device 1 is cut away for about one-half its length to about one-half the diameter of the tubular portion 2, forming the operating end 3, which is of semicircular shape in crosssection, the diameter of the circle being the same as the diameter of the handle portion 2. Said operating end 3 has the straight sides or portions 3 extending from the extreme end 3" nearly to the handle portion 2, and a curve' connects said straight sides 3 with the meeting edges 2' of the handle portion 2. (See Figs. 1 and 3.) By this construction a large open space or throat is left in the operating end of the device for the free discharge of the parings and slicings. In the central part or body of the operating end 3 a longitudinal slit is made and short slits extending at right angles from each end of said longitudinal slit. Said slits are made in the process of making the corer, parer, and slicer and without removing any of the metal from the same. By means of said slits a portion 4, which acts as a cutting-blade, is formed, and said portion 4 is pushed outwardly'from the body of the operating end 3, so that it extends beyond and onthe outside of the plane of the operating end 3, as clearlyshown in the cross-section, Fig. 4. The projecting edge of the portion 4 is sharpened and forms a straight-edged blade, which does the paring and slicing and which extends out beyond the surface of the body of the corer, parer, and slicer. By this construction a cutting-blade is made on the operating end 3 without cutting out any of the stock of said end. The opening or slot in the operating end 3, through which the parings pass, as shown in Fig. 2, is formed by pressing outwardly the portion 4 away from the body of the operating end, leaving a narrow open place or slot in the operating end 3 without cutting out or removing any of the metal. The portion 4, which acts as a cutting-blade, being formed as above described, extending out beyond the plane of the operating end 3, and with its ends or corners free, can be easily sharpened on its edge, and will have a slightly-yielding motion, thus acting more perfectlyasacutting-blade. At the same time, by reason of the cutting-edge of the portion 4 extending out beyond the plane of the operating end 3, as shown in Fig. 4, the edge thereof will more readily engage and operate on thearticle to be pared or sliced. The extreme end 3" of the operating end 3 is made slightly curved or rounded, having the straight portion at the extreme end, as shown, and the curved or rounded corners leading to the straight portions 3' of the operatingend 3. The end 3" is sharpened and is used for digging out eyes in potatoes, and is pushed into the apple or fruit to be cored.

The operation of my combined corer, parer, and slicer is as follows: WVhen it is used for coring apples,'&c., the sharpened end 3" is inserted in the apple and pressed down therein and turned around in the apple until the core is cut out.

After the core is cut out it A is readily pushed or discharged from the wideopen throat of the, operating end 3 between the sides 3. When the implement is used for paring, the blade 4 is used as a paringblade, and the surface 5 of the end 3, between said blade 4 and one side 3', acts as a bear: ing-surface and rests and presses against the surface of the article which is pared, as shown in Fig. 1. When used for slicing, the blade 4, in connection with the surface 5', acts as a slicer, the device being held in such a position by the hand of'the user that the surface a 5, between the blade 4 and the. edge 3',edoes not bear upon the surface of the article being sliced.

The device may also be used for digging out the-eyes-of potatoes, &c., the end 3 being ofsuch a shape that-the end of' the thumb placed-therein will project slightly beyond the cuttingedgeand enable the user topress the-end of his thumb against-the potato in the operation ofdigging'out the eyes, &c.

Indevices ofi this kind Where a portion of the material is cut out or removed to form the opening which determines the thickness of the parings, and through which the parings pass, every time the device is sharpened the opening is made larger and thus a thicker paring is taken off. In-a short While the material is worn away to such an extent that theopening is made so large as to destroy its usefulness; but by stamping the blade out wardly from the body of the device without removing any of it there is just that much 7 more material to be worn away before the device is Worn out.

, Having thus described my invention, what I claim asnew, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A combined corer, parer, and slicer consisting of a single piece of sheet, metal, one end ,ofiwh-ich is cylindrical to form a handle and the other end is semi-cylindrical and is sharpened at the point and is provided with a cuttin g-blade along its central portion, said blade being severed fromthe main portion along one edge and at each end and pressed outwardly beyond the plane of themain portion, thereby forming a narrow openslot between its free edge and the main portion, the ends of the blade 'beingfree, and the outer face of the blade being ground away or sharpened,
