SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 474,749, dated May 10, 1892.

Application filed August 28, 1891- To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, J AMES MALLON, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Neck-Yokes; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertaius to make and use the same.

This invention relates to an improvement in neck-yokes, and is designed more particu larly for use in connection with cultivators or other farming implements; and it has for its object to provide a yoke which will afford ease and comfort to the team by allowing a yielding upward and downward pressure when moved by the tongue.

The invention will be fully understood from the following description and claim, when taken in connection with the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective new of my 1m proved yoke, showing the same applied to the forward end of a tongue or draft-pole. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same; and Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken centrally lengthwise through the pole.

Referring by letter to said drawings, A indicates the neck-yoke, which is composed of a bar a of spring-steel or other suitable material. This bar is shaped as shown, being curved upwardly at its center and its opposite ends carried laterally in the shape of a compound curve, or approximately so. On the under side of each curved branch of the bar a is a brace 17, which is firmly riveted at opposite ends to said bar a to strengthen the same and yet allow said bar to yleld, as desired.

B indicates a T-shaped plate. This plate has the main stem 0 of the T firmly secured to the bar a midway of its length and terminates 'at its forward end in-a depending branch (1, having an eye e. The lateral branches f of the T-plate are connected at their outer ends by straps or links C with the bar a, as shown, and the ends of said bar a carry rings D for attachment to a collar or other suitable part of the harness of a draft-animal.

E indicates a plate, which is secured to the forward upper side of the tongue F. This plate is provided at its forward end which Serial No. 403,950. (No model.)

overhangs the forward end of the tongue with a downwardly-projecting hook or lug g, which is designed to receive the eye on the depending branch d of the neck-yoke, so as to permit said yoke a pivoted or oscillating movement and a rest upon the forward end of the tongue. This plate E is provided at its rear end with a hole h, which is designed to receive a bolt G, which passes down through the tongue and is secured at its forward end by means of a nut, as shown. This bolt is provided at its upper end with a forwardlydirected branch 1', which is designed to overhang the laterally-disposed part of the T- plate, so as to serve as an upward stop therefor and prevent the yoke from becoming detached from the hook g. The hole 71. in the plate E may be screw-tapped and the threads on the bolt Gmay take into said screw-tapped hole so as to secure said plate upon the tongue. By this construction I have a yoke which will permit an oscillating motion and afford ease and comfort to the draft-animals.

In placing the yoke upon the tongue provided with the plate E, it is simply necessary to place the eye of the depending branch D over the hook g. The bolt G should then be turned in the position illustrated, so that its branch t' will overhang the rear portion of the T-plate, which. plate is preferably curved, as shown, so as to permit of the motion desired.

The improved neck-yoke comprising a bar curved as described and having attaching devices at its opposite ends, the rearwardlyextending T-plate secured to said bar and having a depending branch at its forward end provided with an eye, in combination with a plate adapted to be secured to the forward end of the draft-tongue and having a hook to enter the eye of said T-plate, and the bolt also adapted to be secured to the tongue, and its upper end bent to overhang the T- plate, substantially as specified.
