COMBINED STEP-LADDER AND lRONlNG-BOARD.

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, DANIEL WV. ARAVE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Ogden, in the county of Weber and Territory of Utah, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Step- Ladder and Ironing-Board, of which the following is a specification.

My invention is an improved step-ladder IO and ironing-board; and it consists in the de tails of construction hereinafter fully set forth and specifically claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, I have rep- I resented in Figure 1 the device used asastep- I 5 ladder, while in Fig. 2 I have shown it when used as an ironing-board. Figs. 3and 4 are detail views showing the connection between the two parts of the rear portion or support of the step-ladder.

In the figures the ladder proper is shown at A, and consists of two side pieces with the steps secured thereto in the ordinary manner. Brackets project from the upper part of the ladder, as at a, upon each side thereof beneath the top step, and to the projecting ends of these brackets I pivot the ironing-board B, this board having slight movement upon the pivot, the pivots passing through the brackets and into a cleat secured to the upper end 0 of the board. To the lower edge of this cleat is hinged the rear portion or support of the step-ladder. It is made in two parts, the upper part 0 being hinged as stated, and the lower part consists of two legs I) Z), connected 3 5 by a cross-piece c, the legs being pivoted to the upper part 0 by pivots passing through said legs and into the edges of the part 0, as shown. The upper edge of the cross-piece and the lower edge of the upper part 0 are formed inclined or beveled, and these inclined portions overlap each other so as to form a stop to prevent independent movement to the rear of the lower part of the support of the ladder; and in order to prevent free move- ;5 lnent forward or toward the ladder A, except under the conditions hereinafter to be described, I provide a button secured to the upper part C and adapted to be turned to bear upon the cross-piece and hold it firmly in place. It will thus be seen that the ladder, with its support, may be used as an ordinar T stepladder and without being interfered with in any way by the ironing-board in rear of the support. When in use as a step-ladder, I prefer to lock the rear portion at a distance away from the ladder proper, so as to prevent accidental closing of the same. The device for this purpose consists of the bail 1, extending rearwardly from one of the steps of the ladder, this bail being supported in a hori- 6o zontal plane by a guiding-loop 2, carried by the support, and the end of this bail coming in contact with the face of the part 0 prevents closing of the parts. WVhen it is desired, however, to close the ladder, it is only necessary to. throw the bail upward, and the loop, being elongated in an upward direction to receive it, allows the folding to take place.

When it is desired to use the device as an ironing-board, the button which keeps the two parts of the rear portion or support in the same plane is turned,and the lower part of the support is turned upon its pivots, thelegs thereof passing upon the outside of the side pieces of the ladder until they come in contact with the stops f, projecting from the said sides, as shown in Fig. 2, and in this position thelower ends of the ladder sides serve as supports at one end, while the legs of the support serve to sustain the weight at the other end, leav- 8o ing the ironing-board in a horizontal position with the under front portion thereof free from any obstruction beneath.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. The combined ladder and ironing-board consisting of the ladder proper, an ironingboard pivotedthereto, and a support for the ladder, hinged at its upper end and located between the ironing-board and the ladder, said support having a pivoted lower part with means for looking it to the upper part, substantially as described.
