Description

(N0 Modal.) '2 Sheets-Sheet 1.
J. VAN PATTEN.
DIPPER DREDGER.
W/T/VESSES. IN vz.-vv ran.
ATTORNEY.
-outer ends eonneet wih one of the ears E ab each s"ide f the handle, and at their inne1 ende said pintle-shafts eaeh conneet with the slidewaybody part 12 ab eaeh side thereof, as shown at Figs. 1 and 3.
The letters C designate stay 01 steadying ehains, of which there is one on each 0f t-he outer sides 0f the handle H. Eaeh 0f th'e ehains at its front end connects at 0 with the end 0f thehandle, and,as extended rearwardly, they each pass down over one of the pulleys pfand down under one 0f the pnlleys P t0 rise is arranged on and eonnected t0 the shaft S and b a belt passing over ehe top and sides of seid wheel With the lower ends of said hell; connected t0 a pin p*, arranged in the ears A upon the brake-shaft S This brakeshaft journals in bearings b, attaehed t0 a plate N that is offset from and eonn ected t0 the boom B at n The letter d' designates a lever keyed t0 the brake-shaft S, and R a rod pivotally eonnected by a pin a t0 the lever d and therefrom extended rearwardly t0 COI1T1GC'D With the lever d*, that is pivoted at p and provided with operating-handles 71 h by which eonnecnion With said belt 011 the brake-shaft wheel B the said belt 1nay be caused to tighten upon said Wheel, so as t0 control the movement 0f the steadying-ehains upon the pulleysl, and thus regulate and control the sliding 0f the dipper-handle H in the slideways w As thus made and arranged, when' Ehe heitehain O is allowedto unwind from the drum and the dipper by gravity descends int0 the water t0 reach the bottom the dipper-hahdle H slides in the ways 10 the slide W turning on the shaf S to adapt itself so the position 0f the dipperhandle while the chains C as the handle descends, 1nn over the pinions 19 p and under the pulley P on ehe shaft ehains npon the handle, that in a measure, by means of pulleys on the slide, control the movement 0f the dipper-handle to their combination with the brake-wheel, the funetion of the latter being merely aecessory. Furlzhermore, I do not 1innit my invention o0 the particular f01xn 0f brake-wheel shown, as any other well-known means that Will perform the same oifice in snbstantially the sarne manne1 may be 'used.
Having thus deseribed 1ny invention, what I elaim, and desire t0 secnre by Letters Patent, is
.1.- The combination, With the boonn B, made with the slide W, pivoted thereto and having the pulley P and pinions 19 19 at each side, substantially as deseribed, 0f the dipper-handle H, having the steadying-chains O ab each side thereof, eaeh arranged t0 run on one of said pulleys P and 0 n two pinions p? 13 substantially in the manner as and for the purposes sei: forth.
2. The cornbination, with the bo o1n B, 0f the slide W, made wioh the slide-passage 10 and having the pinions 19 19 a1; eaeh side thereof, the shaft S t0 pivot said slide t0 said boom, the pulley P a'rranged upon said shai't a each side 0f said slide-passage, the dipperhandle H, 1nade to straddle said boornand arranged in said slide-passage w and steadying-ehains C one arranged upon each side of said handle, each of said ehains being at its ends connected to said handle and arranged t0 intermediately l'un upon one 0f oho pulleys and 011 two 0f said pinions ab eaeh side of the handle, substantially in the manner as and f01 the purposes sei: f'0rth.
3. The combination, with the boorn B, 0f the slide WV, made With the slide-passage 10 and pivoted to said boom by the shaft S the pnlley P and pinions 10 10 arranged at each Iob side 0f said slide-passage way, the brake-' wheel B arranged on said shaft S said brake- Wheel being provided With a brake-belt, and the dipper-handle H, 1nade to straddle said boom and arranged within said slide-passage, said dipper-handle being at each side pro- Vided With a steadying-chain that a1; its ends connects with ohe handle and intermediately runs on one 0f seid pulleys and 0n two 01": the pinions ab eaeh side of the slid e, substantially in the manner as and f0r the purpose3 set forth.
4:. The eombinati0n, With the boom B, of the s1ide W, made With the central slide-pas sage w", and 1;he pinions 19 13 a1: each side thereof, the shaft S, arranged t0 pivot said slide 1:0 said boom, ehe pulleys P arranged 011 seid shaft, one a1; each side of said slide, the brake-Wheel B arranged 011 one end of said shaft and provided With a brake-belt operative (0 engage With said brake-wheel, substantially as described, the handle H, made t 0 straddle said boom and arranged within said slideway, the steadying-ehainS C? C IIO each a1; its ends attached to one 0f the sides Ju1y, 1890,2u1c1 in the presenee of the two witof said handle and arranged so intermedinesses whose names are hereto W1itteu. ately run 011 0ne 0f said pulleys and on two of tl1e pinions ab each side of said handle, JOHN N PATTEN substantially in the manner as and for the Vitnesses: purposes set forth.
