To aZZ whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, SIMEON RAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Newspaper-Files, of which the following is such a full, clear, and exact description as will enable any one skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

The object of my invention is to construct a simple and convenient file for holding newspapers.

Briefiy and generally stated, the invention consists-of a spring jaw or clamp having a raising lever or handle pivoted thereto engaging a track upon the stationary member of the holder, which stationary member is provided with hooks adapted to engage the paper, and the movable jaw carrying suitable caps for covering over said hooks.

The invention will be best understood by referring to the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is an isometric view showing my file holding a newspaper, and Fig. 2 is an isometric view of the file from the rear. Figs. 3 and 4 are cross-sections thereof on the line 3 4 of Fig. 1, showing the file closed and open, respectively. Fig. 5 is an edge elevation of said file with the ends broken away, illustrating the file when closed; and Fig.6 is a similar view illustrating the file when open.

The same marks of reference indicate the same parts throughout the several views.

10 is the base-board of the file, at the back of which is a wire 11, suitably fastened thereto. The ends of the wire are bent around the ends of the base-board and brought forward to constitute spring-arms 12, which are fast cued to a bar 13, preferably running the full length of the base-board 10. This bar, with the spring-arms 12, forms a spring-j aw, which clamps the papers between it and the baseboard 10. The base-board carries, preferably, two hooks 14, but may be provided with any number thereof, over which the newspapers are placed. The bar 13 is perforated at the hooks and is provided at such places with caps 15 for covering the hooks when the bar or spring-jaw is closed, thus effectually concealing the hooks. Pivoted to about the center of the bar 13 is a lever 16, provided with a suitable handle 17 at one end, and at the other end engaging a track 18, carried by the stationary member or base-board 10 of the file.

The file is adapted to be hung up, and for this purpose may be provided with a perforation 19 at one end, which may be placed over a nail or hook in the wall or other object, and has at the other end a handle 20, which may also be placed upon a nail in the wall. The handle 20 affords a ready means of nianipulating the holder. The base-board 10 of the holder may be suitably labeled or painted with any appropriate characters, such as advertisements, the name of the paper, &c.

To open the file, the handle 17 is raised and 7c the lever 16 put in the position represented in Fig. 6, the lower end of the said lever running upon the track 18 and overcoming the resiliency of the spring-arms 12. When the lever 16 reaches the vertical, the spring-jaw 13 will be locked in its raised position. The newspapers may now be removed from or placed over the hooks 14, after which by manipulating the handle in the reverse direction the spring-jaw 13 may be closed to clamp the papers over the hooks 14 and hold them in place, the caps 15 coming over the hooks 14 and preventing them from injuring any one or tearing objects.

I am aware that it is not new to construct a paper-holder having a spring-jaw and operating-handle pivoted thereto, and do not wish to be understood herein as claiming the same, broadly; but
