Beit known that I, LOUIS SEKoFsKY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco, and State of California, have invented certain Improvements in a Combined Folding Bed and'Cabinet-Furniture; and I hereby declare the following specification and drawings to be a full, true, and exact description of the same.

My invention -relates to beds that are coiicealed or disguised when not in use, and combined with other cabinet-furniture so that the floor-space occupied will be available for double use without in any important way modifying either the bed or the cabinet-furniture so connected by reason of their being combined together.

My invention consists in a rectangular case of such form and dimensions as will receive a common bed when the latter is in a vertical position and in hinging to the front of this case any common forin of cabinet-furniture that can have like dimensions with the central or main case, such articles of cabinetfurniture swinging each way, after the manner of doors, completely concealing the bed when closed, but in no way modified so as to indicate other than permanent use of their purpose in concealing the bed.

It also consists in the method of mounting and hinging the bed to the main case so that the former can be readily removed and require but little, if any, modification for this particular use, as set forth and more fully explained in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.

Similar letters of reference are employed to designate corresponding parts in the different gures.

Figure lis a front elevation of one of my iinproved folding beds combined with a ward robe on one side and a cabinet-case on the other side, the latter containing Various co mpartments adapted for toilet or other purposes. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through Fig. l on the line om. Fig. 3 is also a vertical section through Fig. l, showing the bed in position for use and the hinged cabinet-cases thrown back out of the way. Fig. et is aplan in section on line 'y y of Figs. l, 2, and 3, showing the position of the bed when in use and also that of the hinged cabinet-cases threesections, consisting of central rectangul lar part A, a base C, and a top part F. The central or main part A is rectangular in shape and large enough to contain abed B of any common form, the top or head projecting downward in the base portion C when the bed is folded or raised, as shown in Fig. 2. The bed B is hinged to the base or lower section C of the main case,

as shown in Figs. 2 and?) and also in the enlarged detail, Fig. 5.

The upright or folded position of the bed B is shown in Fig. 2, in which position the hinge D is held by gravity and, as may be seen, the bed can be readily lifted out, the hinge D separating in any position or angle as low as that indicated in Fig. 5.' The hinge D consists, essentially, of a bolt having a curved or iinger-lke projecting end, which bolt is secured by screws or'other suitable means to the bed, and is arranged so that the finger-like end thereof can loosely engage an eye-plate or strap secured rigidly to the lower base C.

To counterbalance the bed B so that it can be easily raised from the position shown in Fig. 3 to that in Fig. 2,Iattach atthe enda weight E, which can be of such proportions as will cause the bed to rise or fold with a few pounds of effort. This is, however, a common expedient, which I do not claim as new.

To render the case portable and convenient to handle and erect, I construct it in three detachable parts, consisting of the base C, the main or central part- A, and the top part F, these being joined in the usual manner by screws, tenons, and keys, or in any manner to make astrong joint between the several parts. When the bed B is lowered, the pivoted support G falls into the position shown in Fig. 3, and when the bed is raised or folded this support returns to the position shown in dotted lines at Fig. 2. This bed B, as may be seen, when thus mounted does not require modication from the common form, butcan be made with woven wire, as shown in Fig. 4, or in any other manner preferred, because IOO the bottom is covered and concealed by other and different parts, as will now be explained.

Between the top F and the base 0,1 attach by hinges to the main part A two cabinetcases M and N, as shown in the front elevation, Fig. l, and the plan view, Fig. 4, and also in edge view at Fig. 2. These eases are made in such manner as to be safely supported from one corner when iilled with goods of any kind. These cases are modified to suit the requirements in any case. In a room other than a bed-room-a library, oiiice, or parlor, for eXample-the cabinet-cases can be for books, filing papers, or other purposes. For a bed-.room I make, preferably, a wardrobe of the case N, provided with hooks and shelves inside and a mirror in the door. At the other side the case M is provided with a desk, as shown at II, Figs. 'l and 2; also, open cases at L L and a locker I.

At O and R, I provide drawers for clothing', and also in the base C of the main structure I arrange two drawers P and Q to contain either personal eiects or clothingfor the bed B, as may be required.

It is obvious that the purposes and uses of the two cabinet-cases M and N can be varied in any manner, as taste or the requirements of use may demand, 'so long as they are mounted to swing into the positions as shown in the drawings.

In case it is desirable t0 partially inclose the bed B these covers can be setin the position indicated by dotted lines at S and S, Fig. Ll.

Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention and the method of applying the saine, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a folding bed, the combination of the central rectangular section A,the base C, on which it is mounted, the bed B, arranged vertically within the sections A and C and pivoted removably to the section C, the top F of the cabinet, the hinged cabinet-cases M and N, arranged between the top F and the base C alongside of the section A, said case M being provided with a desk H, open cases L L, and locker I, and the horizontal drawers O and R in the lower ends, respectively, of the cases M and N, together with the drawers P and Q, located within the case C, all the parts being arranged to operate substantially in the manner and for the purpose specified.
