SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 473,012, dated April 19, 1892.

Be it known that I, JAMES H. MOORE, of Nashua, in the county of Hillsborough and Stateof New Hampshire,haveinventedeertain new and useful Improvementsin WVrought or Malleable Hinges or Butts, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to hinges generally, and more particularly to the class of hinges commonly called butts and employed for hanging doors and similar contrivances.

The invention has for its object the provision of such improvements as will materially enhance the durability of the hinge or butt, and to cheapen the cost thereof.

The invention consists of a hinge or butt composed of two leaves, each of which is composed of a sheet of metal bent at its central line to form an eye or loop, the edges of said sheet being flush with each other, bushings held in the eyes or loops of said leaves, and a pintle uniting the eyes or loops of the two leaves.

The invention will first be described in connection with the annexed drawings and letters of reference marked thereon, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is aplan or face view of my improved hinge or butt opened out. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is also a sectional view-taken on the line 3 3 of Fig.1. Fig.4 is a View of the blank from which the leaf represented on the right hand in Fig.1 is formed. Fig. 5 is a view similar to that shown in Fig. 4, out of which the leaf shown at the left hand in Fig. 1 may be formed.

In carrying out my invention I form the blanks for the two leaves a b of the hinge or butt from suitable sheet metal, as shown in Figs. l and 5, in which Fig. 4 represents the blank from which the leaf bof the hinge may be formed, and Fig. 5 represents a blank suitable for forming the leaf 0. With blanks constructed as shown and described the same may be doubled along a central line, so as to form loops 0 of the part a, being so formed that the loops of the part or leaf 1) may be brought into line or register therewith, so as to receive the pintle d of the hinge. In doubling the blanks, as before described, the leaves a b will be composed of doubled parts,

as is clearly represented in Figs. 2 and 3, through which from side to side may be formed holes e for the reception of screws for securing the leaves to the parts to be hingedly connected. By bending the blanks along their central line leaves are formed, the edges of which are flush with each other, thus giving to the said leaves the utmost strength and neatness of appearance.

In the bite or loop 0, forming the knuckle of the leaves (1 12,1 insert a bushing f of steel or other highwear-resisting material, so as to form a round, smooth, and durable bearing for the pintle d. The bushingsf, being of substantially uniform diameter throughout their length, are adapted to be removed from the eyes or loops of the leaves when worn. These features of the invention, as also the feature of forming the leaves throughout their extent of doubled portions of sheet metal, constitutes my improvement, as in other particulars the hinge may be of the form shown, which may not be novel, or of any other known or equivalent form; and it willbe observed that the improvement may as well be applied to T-hinges, strap-hinges, and hinges and butts of other kinds, as well as door-butts, to which the form of hinge herein shown is particularly adapted. Having thus described my improvements and explained a way in which the same may be constructed and used, though without attempting to explain all the forms or manners in which the same may be constructed, I declare that what I claim is A hinge or butt consisting of two leaves, each of which is composed of a'sheet of metal bent atits centralline to form an .eye or loop, the edges of said sheet being flush with each other. bushings held in the eyes or loops of said leaves, and a pintle uniting the eyes or loops of the two leaves, substantially as described.
