Description

(No Model.)
F. EISSNER. SURGICAL NEEDLE AND HOLDER.
No. 472,258. Patented Apr. 5; 1892.
if item? UNITED STATES FREDERICK EISSNER,
PATENT OFFICE.
OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SURGICAL NEEDLE AND HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 472,258, dated April 5, 1892.
Application filed August 29, 1891. Serial No. 404,090. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDERICK EISSNER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Surgical Needle and Holder; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
My invention relates particularly to the class of devices known as suture-needles, in which the needle proper is carried at the end of a handle or holder of convenientlength, which may'also carry a supply of thread; and it has for its object to improve the construction of such-devices, so that the needle proper may be more fully under the control of the operator, may be held fast in the holder or released therefrom by manipulation at the outer end of the holder, and may be used either fast to the holder or loosely held thereby, as desired, and so that the end of the holder may be smooth and free from projecting set-screws and the like.
In the drawings, Figure l is an elevation of one embodiment of my invention. Fig. 2 is a central section thereof, and Fig. 3 is a sectional detail view thereof on the line a: a: of
Fig. 1 on a plane at right angles to the plane The sleeve or hollow shaft A, which constitutes the holder for the needle, is preferably provided at one end with a head a, which is perforated in different directions by holes b and 1), adapted to receive the shaft of the needle (J. Within the hollow of the sleeve or cylinder A is a clamping-rod B, furnished at its lower end with a screw-thread d, engaging with a corresponding screwthread in the sleeve A, and also furnished with a head f, having a milled edge. The end of the clamping-rod B is adapted to bear against the shaft of the needle 0 when the latter is placed in the hole I) or b, and byrotating said shaft by means of the head f the needle may be released or held firmly in position.
An enlarged cylinder D is carried on the shaft A and contains a bobbin H on the shaft A for holding thread. The cylinder D is also provided with a slot, as J, through which the thread is run. A cap E fits over the enlarged cylinder D and is itself held in place by the head f and the rod B, which passes through it.
The-needle O is provided with a perforated guide-piece G for the thread, fixed thereon near one end, which carries the thread along the shaft A and needle 0, keeping it out of the way of the operator, and which also operates as a shoulder or guard to prevent the shank of the needle from slipping through the hole 1) when placed in position. The holes Z) I) being substantially diametrical and the head a being perforated by any number of such holes that may be found convenient and desirable, the needle can be placed in a number of different positions with reference to the axis of the shaft A, as indicated in the drawings both by full and dotted lines.
In operation the needle is placed in one of the holes adapted to receive it, using the hole which will hold the needle in the position most desirable with reference to the work to be done, and the needle is fixed and held firmly in position by turning the headf. The thread is run through the slot J, the guide G, and the eye of the needle, and the apparatus is ready for use. In some cases the needle may be used without being clamped, the guidepiece G serving to hold the needle in place while being pushed through the parts to be sewed.
The whole device is simple in construction and can be taken apart readily for cleaning after use. WVhenever desired, the position of the needle with reference to the shank of the holder can be changed without Withdrawing the needle from the suture by rotating the clam pin g-rod. The perforated guide-piece on the needle not only permits the needle to be used without being clamped by the rod, but will hold the thread in place should the holder be freed from the needle for the purpose of changing the position of the latter. There are no set-screws projecting from the end of the needle-holder to interfere with the free use of the needle or to prevent the proper and thorough cleansing of the instrument.
I claim as my invention 1. A surgical needle having an eye near its point and a perforated shoulder and guide on its shank, substantially as shown and described.
2. In combination, a needle,a shoulder-piece secured thereon, and a shaft perforated to receive the shank of said needle, substantially as shown and described.
In combination, a needle, a perforated guide-piece secured thereon, and a shaft or holder having a head perforated at different angles to the axis of said shaft, with holes adapted to receive the shank of said needle, substantially as shown and described.
4-. In combination, a hollow shaft perforated to receive a needle, and a rod fittingl loosely within said shaft and furnished with a screw-thread engaging with a screw-thread in said shaft and adapted to bear upon said needle, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of tWo subscribing Witnesses.
FREDERICK EISSNER.
