NUT-LOCK.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 472,111, dated April 5, 1892. Application filed April 23, 1891. Serial No. 390,120. (No model.)

To all whom z5 may concern: l

Be it known that I, ROBERT C. ELLIOTT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Prairie Creek, in the county of Vigo and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nut-Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention has for its objectto provide an improved Vnut-lock which will permit the nut to be adjusted in proper position on its bolt, and, while securely fastening it against accidental removal, will also allow it to be readily readjusted, removed, and replaced when required.

The above-mentioned objects I attain by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l representsalongitudinal sectional view of a bolt with the nut applied thereto; Fig. 2, a sectional View taken on the line no x of Fig. l, and Fig. 3 a sectional view through the nut. Fig. 4 is also a sectional view, and Fig. 5 a plan, of the nut.

Referring to the drawings, the letter A indicates a screw-bolt, which is provided with a longitudinal groove B, extending from its head to its extremity.

The letter O indicates the nut, which is-internally screw-threaded, as usual, and which fits over the threaded portion of the bolt in the ordinary manner. The said nut is provided with an annular groove, on which is located a ratcheted ring D, the ratchet being on its periphery, as shown.

E indicates a pawl, which is made normally to engage one of the ratchets of the ring by means of a spiral spring F. The said pawl and spring are located in a recess on the nut, one end of the pawl extending outside of said recess and being provided with an arm G, which engages a recess G in the outer face of the nut.

The nut may be constructed in various manners and the ring fastened in its groove in any suitable way Without departing from the spirit of my invention.

The ring on its inner side is provided with a feather or projection H, which enters and travels in the longitudinal groove in the bolt as the nut is moved back and forth.

Theoperation of my invention is as follows: The bolt being placed into the position to which it is to be secured, the nut is placed on, the feather in the ring being placed in the groove in the bolt. The nut, by means of a suitable Wrench, is turned up on the bolt to the properly adjusted position, as usual. The ring does not turn with the nut, the pawl riding over the ratchet as it turns until the ring is in its properly-adjusted position, when the pawl fastens and holds the nut there against accidental displacement. Should it be desirable to remove or readjust the nut, the pawl has simply to be drawn forward by its outer arm, which relieves the ring and permits the nut to be turned back on the bolt.

Having thus fully described my invention,

what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination, with the longitudinallygrooved bolt. and the nut, of the internallyfeathered ring seated in an annular groove in said :nut and having its feather seated in the longitudinal groove of the bolt, the exterior of the ring being ratcheted, as described, and the spring-actuated pawl carried by the nutand adapted to engage the ring and hold the nut on its bolt or to be disengaged to release it, substantially as specified.
