MONUMENT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 471,758, dated March 29, 1892.

Application filed November 20, 1891. Serial No. 412,572. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, FLETCHER M. HAWKINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Scotland, in the county of Van Buren and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvement in Tombs; and Ido declare 'thefollowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.

My invention has relation to monuments; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of its parts.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a face View of my invention set in a stone. Fig. 2 are details. Fig. 3 is a cross-section cut on' the line a; xof Fig. 1. Fig. 4is an edge view of the stem.

My invention is made to represent a leaf with its stem inserted in a proper base. It is preferably made of castiron, but may be made of any material.

The body of the tomb is made of two parts, a and b. The partais provided on its straight edge with a groove at, having at its upper end a socket The part b is provided on its straight edge with a tongue I) to fit in said groove, and at its upper edge with a point 19 to fitin said socket. The two parts a and b are provided each with a recess 0 on their front sides, and in the walls of said recess are grooves c. Said parts a and b are provided with corresponding perforations d. The halfstems of said two parts are each provided with a groove e. In the face of the monument and fitting in the grooves c is a glass f. The two halves a and b are held together by means of the point 6 fitting in the socket a, the crosspieces g being bolted to said parts through the perforation d and the bolts h and h passing through the stem of the leaf. When the parts are all put together, the grooves 6 form a channel, through which plaster-of-paris or other suitable material is forced into the interior in rear of the glass plate f. The bolt 71- in the stem is in front of the channel and the bolt h is in the rear of the same, so that both edges are held firmly together.

The plate-glass has inscribed on its inner sides, not exposed to the weather, a proper inscription. The inside of said plate may be painted any color. The whole tomb when completed has all its crevices puttied or ce mented until perfect-1y air and water tight and is then painted.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination of a part,.o, provided with a groove a,-terminating in a socket a groove 6 in the stem of said part, recess 0 and groove 0 in the walls of said recess, part I), provided with the tongue I) and point 19 groove 6 in the stem of said part, recessc and groove c in the Wall of said recess, plate-glass f, adapted to fit in the said groove 0', and bolts h and h, substantially as shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.

2. The combination of the part a, provided with the groove a, terminating in a socket a grooveein the stem of said part, recess 0, having the perforations d, and groove 0' in the walls of said recess, part I), provided with the tongue I) and point 19 groove 6 in the stem of said part, recess 0, provided with perforations (1, and grooves c in the Wall of said recess, perforated cross-pieces g, adapted to be bolted to said parts, plate-glass f, adapted to fit in the said groove 0', and bolts h and 71., passing through the stem, substantially as shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
