SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 471,643, dated March 29, 1892.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMEs F. KELLOGG, a

citizen of the United States, and a resident of Mitchell, county of Davison, State of South Dakota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Neck-Yokes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.

A represents a wagon-pole, having at itsfront end a metallic tip or thimble portion B to embrace the end of the pole. About said tip is provided an annular flange or stop O.

The neck-yoke D is turned tapering from a central line, as a, to the ends. is provided having portions 12 1), adapted to embrace the yoke and conform to the taper on either side of the line a, by which end movement of the clasp is prevented. As shown, the two portions 1) and b of the clasp are connected by an offset portion c,in which is provided semicircular portions d d, which when the flange portions e are brought together and secured by rivets, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, will form a circular aperture or ring adapted to embrace the neck portion of the dog F, link O, or yoke-ring H, by which construction the parts F, G, and H are swiveled to the yoke. To the dog F is pivotally secured the yoke-ring H, at the lower portion of which A clasp, as E,

is provided a hook f to engage the flange O in operating the parts, as shown in Fig. 1. While the yoke is free to swing or swivel about the dog F, a forward movement will cause the lower end g of the dog F to bite or engage the tip B and raise the hook f up to engage the flange 0, thus securely holding the yoke in engagement with the pole.

Calling attention to what is shown in Fig. 2, which differs from that shown in Fig. 1 only in removing the lower end portion 2 of the dog F, the upper end portions serve as a link J, bywhich the yoke is allowed to swing forward and back over the ring 'H, which is secured to the flange 0 by the hook For close hitching or carriage-work I prefer that the ring H have formed thereon a neck, as h, and head g and hook f, diametrically opposite the neck, to be embraced by the semi-.

The prime object of my invention, as has been shown and described, is to provide a practical and inexpensive means by which the pole of a wagon may be secured from falling and the team secured thereto in the case of a detached lug or the breaking of asingletree, thereby preventing serious injury and probably loss oflife and property.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination, with a pole and neck-yoke of the tip provided with a stop 0, of a 'dog or pawl having one of its ends connected with the yokebyaswivel-joint,theothertohaveabiting engagement with thetip, a ring H, pivotally secured to said dog, and the hook f to engage the stop O,substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
