J. H. J. HAINES. METHOD OF PUTTING UP METAL FOIL PACKAGES.

JOHN H. J. HAINES, OF FLUSHING, ASSIGNOR TO ALBERT SIOHEL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
METHOD OF PUTTING UP METAL-FOIL PACKAGES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 471,609, dated March 29, 1892. Appli ation fil d llovemher 25,1891. SerialNo. 413,047. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. J. HAINES, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Flushing, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Method of Putting Up Metal-Foil Packages, of which the following is a specification.
Myinvention relates to an improved process of putting up packages of tobacco or other substances in metal-foil wrappers, and is designed as an improvement upon the processes heretofore employed, wherein the Wrapper is folded around a suitably-shaped funnel with the edges of the wrapper overlapping, and the substances are afterward introduced into the funnel and the latter afterward withdrawn.
Heretofore it. has been the practice in order to make a secure package to allow avery considerable overlap of the edges of the wrapper uponthe funnel. Owing to the extent of this overlap, a great deal of surplus metal foil beyond that which would be necessary to simply inclose the package in foil is required for each package.
The object of my invention is to economize in the use of foil and at the same time obtain a package which shall be practically as secure, and, in fact, more secure, than those produced by the ordinary process.
In carrying out my invention in the putting up of tobacco or other substances in tinfoil packages I wrap the tin-foil around the ordinary packing-funnel with the edges of the sheet-metal foil slightly overlapping one another asufficient distance only to permit the one edge to be fastened upon the other and then apply the pressure of a suitable heated tool to the surface of the foil where it is lapped. In this operation the funnel forms a solid backing, which prevents injury to the foil in the operation of applying the pressure. It will be obvious that by this procedure the packages can be much more expeditiously made than by the plan which'has been here tofore proposed of making up metal-foil packages the edges of which are soldered together overa paper wrapper and the wrappers afterward slipped upon the funnel.
My invention is of especial utility in the putting up of tobacco or other substances in foil-wrappers after the manner ordinarily employed of folding the wrapper around the funnel and then filling the package, because I am able to reduce very materially the extent of overlap of the foil edges, which has heretofore been necessary and can therefore save largely in the material.
The drawingillustrates the manner of practicing my invention, the funnel upon which the wrapper is wound for filling being shown in perspective.
The tool A resembles in general form the soldering-instrument at present in general use; but the point is blunted or rounded at its lower end where it engages the foil.
The tool A may be mounted on a-suitable fixed support, or it may be adapted to be held in the hand, as well understood in the art. The lower end of the tool, or the pressurepoint thereof, as indicated at E, is blunt or rounded to prevent cutting 0E or injury to ferent from the ordinary forms of solderingtool, which have a rather sharp point that in. practice would be found entirely unsuitable for uniting metal foil, because it would tear or injure the foil. I prefer to make the point E from iron, steel, nickel, or similar material which 'Will not readily amalgamate with tin, as does the ordinary copper. I by this means obviate the danger of the pressure-tool when highly heated wiping away the metal foil or the coating thereof when the pressure is applied, as hereinafter described, and the foil sheet is run along under the point with pressure.
F indicates the ordinary packers funnel as employed in putting up packages of tobacco. The tin-foil wrapper or the paper and tin-foil Wrapper is applied, as well understood in the art, by Wrapping it around said funnel and the end folded down, after which the material is introduced into the funnel in proper amount and the latter is then withdrawn.
In practicing my invention the edges of the.
tin-foil wrapper are overlapped upon the side of the funnel a distance indicated by the full and dotted lines, and then the lapped portion is pressed down by means of the heated'pressthe foil, and in this respect is essentially difure-tool, thus uniting thetwolappedsurfaces Where they are in contact firmly together by the action of the heat communicated from the tool through the outer metal sheet, combined with the pressure. The pressure is applied by applying the foil at its lapped portion While upon the funnel to the tool E and moving it. along against said tool in the line of the joint, the funnel with the wrapper being pressed upward rather firmly against the heated tool. In this operation the funnel forms a solid backing, which prevents injury to the foil. The projecting end of the Wrapper may be folded down upon the end of the funnel either before or after the operation just described. An overlap at the edges of about one-eighth of an inch Will be found sufficient for all practical purposes.
It will be obvious that in practicing my invention the tool might be drawn along over the su'rface of the tin-foil sheet at'the part where I it overlaps the other sheet, pressure being applied to a suitable degree at the same time.
WVhat I claim as my invention is The herein-described improved process of putting up metal-foil packages, consistingin Wrapping the sheet-metal foil around the filling-funnel with its edges overlapped, then pressing the lapped portions together by a heated pressure-tool applied to the outer surface, and afterward filling the package through said funnel, the foil-wrapper soldered on said funnel being retained in place thereon for that purpose, all as set forth.
