UNrrEn STATES PATENT Quince,
GUSTAVE SOBOTKA AND ADOLPH KLIEMETSOI-IEK, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNORS TO FLEISCHMANN dz 00., OF SAME PLACE.
METHOD OF AND APPARATUS FOR PURIFYINGAND REGULATING THE TEMPERATURE OF AIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 471,294, dated March 22, 1892.
Application filed August 20, 1891.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known thatwe, GUSTAVE SOBOTKA and ADOLPH KLIEMETSOHEK, citizens of Austria'- I-Iungary, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements 1n the Method of and Apparatus for Purifying and Regulating the Temperature of Air; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the inventlon, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to improvements in apparatus for purifying and regulating the temperature of air; and the object of the invention is to provide means for purifying air and simultaneously cooling or heating the same, whereby either hot, medium, or cold purified air may be delivered direct from the purifying apparatus into the desired receiver for charging purposes or for any of the various processes carried on in breweries, distilleries, and similar establishments.
Our invention will first be described in connection with the accompanying drawings and then pointed out in the claims at the end of this specification.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 represets a sectional side elevation of one form of apparatus which may be used for carrying our improved method into effect, and Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view of a portion of the dry filter shown at the right of Fig. l.
A denotes a suitable tank or cylinder, which may contain water or other suitable liquid filtering media, as indicated at a.
B denotes afilter comprising a suitable casing, within which is placed a series of layers 1) of cotton or similar material, which is confined between perforated plates b, bolted to lugs or flanges b projecting from the interior of the cylinder.
0 denotes a pump of any desired construction, which connects by means of pipes c c with the lower portions of the filters A and B.
D denotes an upright cylinder or pipe-section, which serves as an air inlet or conduit, and which is connected by means of a short pipe-section D with the top of the filter B, and which is provided at the lower end there- Serial No. 403,208- (No model.)
of with an extension D for a purpose to be described.
E denotes a suitable pipe, which may enter the inlet pipe or cylinder D near the lower portion thereof and which is bent so as to extend within the cylinder nearly the entire length thereof in a suitable coil or preferably up and down in a serpentine or zigzag course parallel with the cylinder, as shown at E, and its exit endconnects by means of a pipe-section E with a pipe E which extends vertically through the cylinder or filter A and is provided at the lower end thereof Witha suitable coil Eflwhich preferably forms a continuation of the pipe and terminates in an upright portion E which connects by means of a pipe-section E with a pipe F. The pipe F is provided with suitable valves f f which are located above and below the point of connection with the pipe E respectively, as shown, and said pipe F communicates through the valve f with a brinepump G and through the valve f with the exhaust of a steam-engine or other suitable source of supply of a heating medium, which may be either gas or liquid under pressure. The pipe 11 is provided with an extension e, which opens into the outer air and is controlled bya suitable valve e, and the pipe E is controlled by a suitable valve 6 H denotes an exhaust-pipe, which leads from the lowermost portion of the coil E to a suitable reservoir for the purpose of emptying the contents of the coil when desired, said pipe being controlled by a suitable valve h. The extension D of the inlet pipe or cylinder D forms a chamber within which condensed water from the circulating-pipes E may collect and be discharged through the short pipe-section d, provided with a valve cl.
The operation of our invention is as follows: The air entering the standpipe or cylinder D, as shown by the arrows, passes downward into the filter B, being drawn by the pump C through the cotton or other filtering media therein, and is forced into the lower portion of the filter A, and, rising therein through the water or other liquid filtering media, passes out through the exit-pipe A, from which it may be directed into a fermenter or any suitable receptacle containing the liquid to be charged, the pump 0 operating to draw in and force the air in the usual manner. If it is desired to heat theair simultaneously with its passage through the purifying apparatus, the valves f and 6 will be closed and the valves f and c opened, and thereupon steam or other suitable heating medium may be caused to circulate through the pipes F, E, E E and E and out at the exit end a into the open air, thus heating the liquid in the cylinder A, which, being in contact with the air circulating through the same, will heat the air to the desired temperature. If now it be desired to cool the air simultaneously with its passage through the purifying apparatus, the valves f and c are closed and the valves f and c are opened, and thereupon salt brine or other cooling medium may be forced by the pump G so as to circulate through the pipes E, E, E E and E, &c., and cool the air which circulates through the apparatus in contact therewith. To clear the pipes and coil of salt brine or other cooling-liquid therein, the valve h may be opened, and thereupon the liquid will flow through the pipe ll into a suitable reservoir for that purpose. By this method the air which is to be injected into the fermented wort, beer, or other liquid to be charged is cleansed of all impurities and simultaneously cooled or heated to the desired temperature, and may be delivered by suitable pipe connections direct from the purifier in a moist state.
\Ve are aware that it has heretofore been proposed to cleanse or purify air in quartz mills, powdermills, 850., by passing it through a liquid filtering medium and through screens with interposed layers of sponge or other porous material for the purpose of cleansing the air of dust and sand, that it has also been proposed for purposes of ventilation to supply air to railway-cars, dwellings, &c., by causing the air to pass into the apartment or car through pipes and water-tanks in contact with heat-circulating pipes or cooling media, the air being humidified by contact with the surface of the water, and such apparatus have been provided with fans for drawing the air from the humidifying-box and forcing it into the buildin Hence we make no broad claim to such apparatus.
