SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 470,643, dated March 8, 1892-.

To all whom it may concern- Be it known that I, GEORGE A. LOWRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Des Moiues, in the county of Polk and State of 5 Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nipper-s; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertaius to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improvement in nippers designed to be used in automatic feeders for twine-making machines, and is intended as an improvement on the nippers I 5 shown and described in my application filed June 9, 1890, Serial No. 354,816.
The invention consists in the construction substantially as hereinafter described, and
set forth in the claims.
Like letters of reference are used to designate similarparts in the several figures of the drawings, in wl1ich Figure 1 is a side elevation of the nippers with jaws closed. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the nippers with jaws open, and Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the adjustable block.
The nippers herein shown are designed to consist of two arms B and C, as is customary,
which are pivoted near their lower ends and formed into jaws D. The arm B at any proper distance above its pivot is bent nearly at right angles to the arm 0 and is fitted with an adj ustable block A, which latter is provided with a central aperture, enabling it to slide 5 freely upon such arm, and with a set-screw for holding it in any predetermined position, and with a roller a for the purpose hereinaffor set forth.
A spring E is placed between and connects the arms 13 and O, and serves, furthermore, to hold the jaws of the same closed, as is shown in Fig. 1. The jaws D may havea pin affixed to one of them, which is arranged to slide freely in a recess 0r hole in the other jaw, the
pin being placed at such a distance from the lower ends of the jaws as to regulate the depth of the bite of the same, or, in other words, to act as a stop or obstruction to the entrance of the grass farther into the jaws than the location of the pin.
These nippers are intended to be attached by their screw-threaded end to a wheel or to a chain-such as is shown in the application before mentionedand are designed to be opened at suitable intervals by means of any 5 suitable mechanism-such as a cam, as is shown in the application aforesaid. The cam or other mechanism for opening the jaws is arranged to strike the roller 0; on the adj ustable blook and so move the arm B audopen 6o the jaws to any predetermined degree. By adjusting the block at varyingdistances f rom the outer end of the bent portion of the arm B the distance which the jaws will open may be correspondingly varied. A roller is placed upon the block for the purpose of making the least possible friction when the cam or other mechanism strikes the same.
It is obvious that a skilled mechanic may make variations in the construction shown and described without departing from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. Nippers for an automatic feeder for a twine-machine, consisting of two pivoted arms having j aws, a spring for normally closiugthe same, and an adjustable piece or block on one of the arms, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. 8o
2. Nippers for an automatic feeder for a twine-machine, consisting of a pair of arms pivoted and having jaws, one of which arms is bent outwardly and carries an adj ustable piece or block, substantially as and. for the purpose set forth.
