Description

(No Model.) 4 I U. BEAUSJOUR.
GAR COUPLING.
No. 470,464. Patented Mala-8, 1892.v
WUH/es' ses *raras CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 470,464, dated March 8, 1892. Application filed September 30, 1891. Serial 110.407,215. (No model.)
7To a/ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, URGEL BEAusJoUR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Saginaw, in the county of Saginaw and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Couplers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying draw-` ings. 4
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in car-couplers and the invention consists in the peculiar construction of a hooked draw-bar and the means for coupling and uncoupling, whereby carsmay be uncoupled by a rotation of one or both of said bars.
The invention further consists in the peculiar construction, arrangement, and combination of the various parts, all as more fully hereinafter describec In the drawings, Figure l is a bottom plan view of two car-frames to which my invention is applied, one coupler being shown partly in `section and the other in elevation.V Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the uncoupled position of the couplers. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of a car. Fig. 4 is a horizontal central longitudinal section through the draftbar. Fig. 5 is a cross-section thereof on line a; Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a detached section of the locking-latch for the coupling-lever. Fig. 7 is a front elevation thereof with the front plate removed. Fig. S shows a modified form of applying the backing-spring.
A and B are two car-frames representing two adjoining cars of a train to which my coupler is attached.
C are the draft-bars,having coupling-hooks D formed at one end and preferably integral therewith.
At the rear end this coupler connects with the draft-bolt E, whichpasses through the plates F, which are slidingly secured upon the bolt F. and bearing at its ends against these plates.
I is a side spring bearin g against a plate J, which in turn bears against the ends of the plates F.
K is a bracket or stirrup secured to the under side of the car about midway the length of the draft-bar and through which the draftbar passes.
L is a ball-shaped guide-block secured in a corresponding curved bearing M, formed within this bracket. The draw-bar is adapted to have a sliding movement through this guide-block and the guide-block to have a rocking motion in the bearing M, forming a pivot for said draw-bar to allow of lateral movement in coupling the two hooks together, the side spring I allowing of the angular movement of said draft-bar and tending to hold the hooks in their coupled position as soon as they have become engaged. The guide-block L is also adapted to have a rotary movement in the bearing M and is so' constructed that in its rotation it will carry with it the draft-bar. This I preferably arrange by making a square socket through the guideblock and a square draft-bar to Iit therein, as plainly shown in Fig. 5.
To uncouple these couplers I rotate one of them by means of a lever N, which passes through a slot O in the bracket K, secured to the guide-block `L andaconnecting-rod P, being pivotally secured to the outer end of that lever and extending to the side of the car in convenient position for operation by the trainman.
l The couplers being coupled, as shown in Fig. 1, to uncouple them the operator draws upon one of the connecting-rods P, rotating one coupler to the position shown in Fig. 2, with its hook at right angles to the hook of the adjoining coupler, which will allow the cars to separate without trouble.
Q are guide blocks or buffers arranged beside the coupler to limit its motion and to guide lthe adjoining coupler properly in the act of coupling.
The connecting-rod P at its outer end is provided with a suitable handle R and with a notch R in its lower edge adapted to engage with a cross-bar S, formed on a bracket S at the side of the car, a spring T holding the notch in engagement with the cross-bar, as plainly shown in Fig. 7.
To rotate the coupler-hooks with the least friction possible I preferably cut off the corners of the hooks, as at a, and also round the corners of the draw-bar at the point where` the hook engages therewith, as shown at b. Instead of using the backing-spring I at the end of the draft attachment, I may apply it IOO to the block L,as shown in Fig. 8, in which c is a follower or pin guided in a socket d and backed by a spring e therein, all so arranged that when the coupler is pressed laterally it will compress the spring, which will hold it normally coupled.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. In avcar-coupler, the combination of a rotary draw bar, an intermediate pivotal bearing for said draw-bar, consisting of a ball-shaped block, and a side-spring bearing for said bar, substantially as described.
2. In a car-coupler, the combination, with the draw-bar, of a ball-shaped block through which the same passes, abracketin which the block engages, havinga slot O therein, a lever on the block passing through the slot in the bracket, a spring-bearing engaging the side of the drawnbar to permit lateral movement thereof, and means formoving the lever to revolve the draw-bar, substantially as described.
3. In a car-coupler, the combination, with a draw-bar, a hook thereon, a guide-block with which said draw-bar slidingly engages, a pivotal bearing for said guide block, and means for rotating said guide-block and drawbar, substantially as described.
4. In a car-coupler, the combination, with the draw-bar, the guide-block L, the bracket K, the bearing M therein, the lever N, and connecting-rod I), substantially as described.
5. In a car-coupler, the combination, with the draw-bar and the guide-block, of the stirrup K, socket d, follower c, and spring e, substantially as described.
6; In a car-coupler, the combination, with a draw-bar adapted to -loe uncoupled by rotating thesame, of the connecting-rod P, having the notch R in its lower face, the bracket S', the cross-bar S, and the spring T, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses. y
