WAGON-BRAKE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 469,994, dated March 1, 1892. Application filed November 20, 1891. Serial No. 412,544. (No model.)

T0 all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, ROBERT ELI DAVIS, of Greene, in the county of J etferson and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Vagon- Brakes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make. and useit, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specication.

My invention relates to an improvement in automatic wagon-brakes; and it consists in certain novel features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts which will be fully described hereinafter, and more particularly referred to in the annexed claim.

The object of my invention is to apply the brake to the wagon in such a manner and connecting it with a forwardly-extending rod, so that it will be applied when the horses draw back upon the neck-yoke.

The accompanying drawing is a plan view of a wagon provided with my improved brake.

A represents the wagon-tongue, which is secured between the ends of the hounds B in the usual manner. The rear end of the pole is constructed with a slot C, and extending across this slot or opening and the ends of the hounds is the doubletree D.

E represents a metallic plate,which extends upward and backward over the doubletree and secured at its opposite ends to the pole A. This plate is also provided with a slot F, corresponding with the slot C in the end ot' the tongue. The doubletree is secured in position by a pin G,\vhich extends down through the slotted plate E, the doubletree, and the slot C, so that the doubletree has a free backward movement. The doubletree also constitutes a brake-bar, and secured to the inner sides of its opposite ends are the blocks Il, which bear against the wheels when the bar D is pushed rearward. .Extending forward in a line with the pole and secured to the doubletree is the loop I, having a ring J formed in its forward end. K represents an endwise-moving rod which is mounted on the upper side of the tongue A in the guides L and which is secured at its rear end to the ring J ofthe loop I. Connected to the outer end of .this rod K is the neck-yoke M, of ordinary construction.

The doubletree is provided with singletrees N and stay-chains O.

IVhen the wagon is being drawn forward, or when it is desired to back the same into any desired position, a wedge P is inserted in the slots F and C behind the doubletree, so as to keep the brake in a forwardly-extending position and away from the wheels; but when a grade in the road is being approached and it is desired to apply the brake the wedge P is withdrawn, allowing the bar D to push backward as the horses pull against the neckyoke.

The construction and operation ofthe brake are very simple, and by its use an effectual means is provided for automatically applying the same. Being secured as it is to the lower or running-gear portion of the wagon it is not affected by changing wagon-bodies, as is the ease where the operating-lever and other parts of the brake are secured to the body and have to be removed before the body can be taken off.

Having thus described my invention, I claim- In a wagon-brake, the combination, with a slotted pole, a cross-bar provided with a pin which moves in said slot, and a wedge adapted to t the slot behind the bar, of a yoke I, secured to the forward sido of the bar, a ring formed in the bend of the yoke, a forwardlyconnecting rod secured to said ring and adapted to move in guides on the pole, and a neck-yoke attached to the outer end of the rod, substantially as shown and described.
