UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL OONBOY, or TORONTO, CANADA.
CARRIAG E-TO P.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 469,964, dated March 1, 1892. Application filed June 26, 1891. Serial No. 397,572. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DANIEL CoNBoY, of the city of Toronto, in the'county of York, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Carriage-Tops, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a combined prop-nut and curtain-knob; and it consists of a prop-nut having a hole screwed entirely through it to receive the screwed prop-bolt, the outer end of the screwed hole being filled by a curtain-knob screwed into' the said hole and forming a finish to the nut in addition to performing its function as a curtain-knob, substantially as hereinafter more particularly explained, and then definitely claimed.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the top provided with myimprovement. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail of the prop-bolt and combined prop-nut and curtain-knob. Fig. 3 shows a detail of the prop-nut and curtain-knob detached from each other. I
Heretofore it has been necessary to connect the curtain A toa curtain-knob B, projecting from the rail 0, and as the curtain A has to pass over the prop-bolt D, which usually projects considerably outside of the rail, the front edge of the curtain so held will be loose and baggy, which is unsightly, unless held by a leather strap, which of course adds to the cost of the top. By the adoption of my improvement I not only secure means for effectually holding the front of the curtain in proper position, but I also provide simple and cheap means for forming a finish to the prop-nut.
E is a prop-nut, which is screwed onto a prop-bolt D, and F is the curtain-knob shaped as indicated in Fig. 3, and when screwed into the nut E finishes the appearances of the said nut. If desired, the disk G may be made detachable from the nut E, as it is held in position by the curtain-knob F. If desired, an independent cap may be held by the nut F over the disk G, in order to form a finish. It has been customary to press, solder, or otherwise attachan independent cap on the nut E for the purpose of forming the finish. By my invention this is done by the curtain-knob F, which not only forms the finish, but also performs its function as a curtain-knob.
I am aware of the Patent No. 96,253; but the device shown therein is essentially different from mine, inasmuch as in the said patent the screw-threaded end of the ornamental head passes through the prop-nut and is screwed into the prop-bolt, thus requiring two separate holes and screw-threads, whereas in my device I make but one screw-threaded hole and screw the curtain-knob into one end thereof and the prop-bolt into the other, thus simplifying-the device and making it much cheaper to construct.
What I claim as my. invention is A combined prop-bolt, nut, and curtainknob, comprising a prop-nut havingathreaded hole extending through it, a prop-bolt, and a curtain-knob, both of the'same diameter and with the same sized thread, said prop-bolt being screwed into one end of the hole in said prop-nut and the curtain-knob screwed into the other end of said hole, substantially as described.
Toronto, June 6, 1891.
DANIEL CONBOY.
