To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, GEORGE G. CHAUNCEY, of Fulton, in the county of Oswego, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Oheckrein-Holders, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to the class of checkrein-holders in which a spring-actuated spool has wound upon it a strap to which the check rein is connected, and thus the checkrein is adapted to yield to undue strain incident to the horses stumbling, and therefore obviates the liability of the checkrein being broken.

The invention consists in simple and efficient means for more positively adjusting the tension of the checkrein-holder and more securely locking the adjusting devices, as hereinaftermore fully described, and specifically set forth in the claim.

In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of a checkrein-holder embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 shows the same with the front side plate removed. Fig. 3 is a view of the inner side of said side plate; and Fig. 4 is a transverse section 011 line 00 00, Fig. 1.

0 represents an annular case, which is to be fastened to the top of the harness-saddle. In the center of said case is a shaft a, which ispivoted to both side plates of the case and protrudes through one of said plates, and has its extremity either squared for the application of a key or otherwise adapted for turning it. The cover or detachable side plate of the case is secured in its position independent of the shaft to, and the latter is only journaled to the case and confined from lateral as Well as longitudinal movement. Around the said shaft is placed loosely the spool 19, which is connected to the shaft by the coil-spring c, and to the said spool is attached'a strap t, which passes through a slot in the front portion of the case and has connected to its outer end a snap-hook f or other suitable device for securing the end of the checkre'in to said strap, which thus constitutes an extension of the checkrein B.

is most positive and is effected in a very simple manner. To increase the tension it is only necessary to apply a wrench or key to the protruding end of the shaft a and turn the same. The dog 6, being in contact with the ratchet-wheel d, prevents reverse movement of the shaft and'retains the spring in its adjustment. To reduce the tension the dog is thrown olf from the ratchet-wheel by means of the thumb-piece 1', which is conveniently accessible. At the same time the shaft a is held under control of the operator by means of the wrench or key applied to said shaft. 'The operator, thus feeling the tension,

can allow the shaft to turn to reduce the tension to the desired degree.

What I claim as my invention is In combination with the case 0, spool b,and strap 15, wound on said spool, the shaft a, journaled in both side plates of the case and confined from lateral as well as longitudinal movement and having one end projecting at the exterior of the case and adapted for the application of an implement by which to turn it, the spring 0, connecting the spool to the shaft, the ratchet-wheel d, rigidly secured to the shaft, the dog e, having its pivot passing through the side of the case, and the thumbpiece 11, fixed to the outer end of said pivot, said j ournaled shaft and pivoted dog allowing the tension of the spring to be positivelyadjusted to any desired degree and securely retained in its adjustment, as set forth.
