COAL-MINING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 469,608, dated February 23, 1892.
Application filed August 22, 1891. Serial No. 403,378. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern.:
Be it known that I, J AMES TAYLOR, of Edwards, in the county of Peoria and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Coal-Mining Machine, ot' which the following is a specitication, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved coal-mining machine, and Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section taken on line oc x in Fig. 1.
Similar` letters of reference indicate correspending parts in both views.
The object of my invention is to construct a simple and effective machine for cutting coal in coal-mining, which may be operated conveniently by an electric or other motor placed upon the machine, and which may be readily advanced by hand or power as the cutting goes on until the body of coal to be detached is undermined.
The invention consists in the particular construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
The stationary frame A of the machine is secured to any suitable fixed support. Two arms B B are connected with the frame A by the pivotal bolt- C. The arms extend forward and between their free ends is journaled a cutting-wheel D on the pin a. The arms B B are offset within the rim of the Wheel, so that the combined thickness of the arms and the central portion of the wheel is equal to the Width of the rim of the wheel, thus permitting the arms to enter into the cutting made by the wheel.
The wheel D is furnished with removable cutters b on its periphery, which are provided with shanks c, extending through the rim of the wheel, and receiving-nuts d, which are turned 'down on the wheel-rim, clamping the cutters securely in place.
The wheel D on its upper face isv furnished with a toothed rim e, which is engaged by a beveled pinion f, mounted on a shaft g, journaled in `bearings 71. h', secured to the arm B. The shaft g is provided with the spur-wheel i for receiving power from an electric or other suitable motor mounted upon the arm B and moving with the said arm.
The arm B is provided with a segmental worm-wheel E, concentric with its pivotal bolt O, and in journal-boxes j on the frameA is journaled a worm 7c, which engages the worm-Wheel E. The worm-shaft is prolonged beyond one of its bearings and provided with a motor-wheel Z, which is engaged bya corre'- sponding wheel Z on the vertical shaft m, journaled in the bracket n, secured to the frame A. The shaft m is provided with the hand-wheel 0, by which itminay be turned, and with a ratchet-Wheel p, which is engaged by the pawl q, pivoted on the bracket fn.
Motion being imparted to the shaft g from any suitable source of power, the wheel D is revolved, and as itis revolved the arms B B are moved forward by turning the Worm 7c, thus carrying the wheel D up to its work. The cutters b readily remove the coal as the wheel advances, and the wheel is constantly held up to its work by the action of the Worm and by the pawl-and ratchet mechanism above described.
The cutters b are preferably notched at the center, as shown in Fig. 2. They are readily removed for sharpening after loosening the nuts d.
Owing to the construction of the arms which carry the wheel D, the said wheels .may cut a groove in the body of the coal equal in depth to nearly the diameter of the wheel. The frame A may be secured to any convenient support, or it may be fastened to the oor of the mine by means of a jack-screw.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a coal-mining machine, the combination., with a frame and arms pivoted to the frame, one of the said arms being slotted, of a cutting-wheel mounted in the arms and having a toothed rim, a driving-shaft mounted on one of the arms and carrying a pinion projecting through the slot in the arm and engaging the toothed rim of the cutting-wheel, said shaft being adapted to be driven by a suitable motor, a segmental worm-wheel on the lower end of one of the arms, and a worm engaging the said worm-wheel, substantially as herein shown and described.
