Description

(N0v Model.)
J. OBRIAN. ADJUSTABLE SIBVE.
No. 469,488. PatentedFehZB, 1892.
' Ina/enfor- UNIT-El) STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN OBRIAN, on THORN HILL, CANADA.
ADJUSTABLE SIEVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 469,488, dated February 23, 1892.
Application filed June 4: 1.891 Serial No. 3951109. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN OBRIAN, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Thorn Hill, Manitoba, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Im= provements in Adjustable Sieves; and I do declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to makeand use the same.
My invention has relation to improvements in sieves such as employed in thrashingmachines; and it has for its object to provide a construction of sieve-embodying devices adapted to be adj ustably fixed, whereby the size of the meshes or openings for the passage of the grain may be increased or diminished, so as to adapt the sieve for employment in connection with various kinds of grain, 850.
To the attainment of the foregoing object the invention consists in the construction, novel combination, and adaptation of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis an inverted plan view of my improved sieve; and Fig. 2 is a section of the same, taken in the plane indicated by the line 00 x on Fig. 1.
Referring by letter to the said drawings, A indicates the main frame of my improved sieve, which is preferably of a rectangular contour, and may be made of any material suitable to the purpose sought to be attained. Preferably stepped or recessed at its ends and connected to the upper side of the end bars of the frame A at about the middle thereof is a bar B, which is designed and adapted to form one of the bearings for one end of each transverse slat, as will be presently described. Extending vertically through the bar B at about the middle thereof is a bolt 0, which has its lower end threaded to receive a nut D, which serves, in conjunction with other devices, to adj ustably fix the adjustable bar, as will be presently described. The adjustable bar E is provided at or adjacent to its middle with averticallydisposed longitudinal slot at, through whichthe bolt C passes. Extending through the ad justable bar E from the lower side thereof are set-screws F, which bear at their upper ends against the under side of the fixed bar B and serve to fix the distance between the fixed and adjustable bars, while the nut D, of bolt 0 retains the adjustable bar in such position.
G indicates the transverse slats of the sieve, which are preferably of the proportional thickness and width illustrated, and are of a length corresponding to the distance between the bars B and E and the side bars of the rectangular frame A. These slats G are respectively provided at their outer ends adjacent to their upper edge with a lug which takes into the inner side of the side bars of the frame A, which form a bearing for the outer ends of the slats, and at their inner ends said slats are provided with lugs adjacent to their upper and lower edges, which lugs are j ournaled, respectively, in the fixed bar B and the adjustable bar E whereby it will be perceived that when said bar E is adjusted the inclination of the several slats will be varied and the openings between the same increased and diminished, as is obvious. In some instances I contemplate dispensing with the fixed bridge-bar B, in which case the bolt 0 would take through one of the side bars of the frame upon which the adjustable bar E would be mounted, and the slats would extend entirely across the frame instead of halfway, as illustrated.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As an improved article of manufacture, the thrashing-sieve described, comprising the rectangular frame, the central longitudinal bridge-bar secured at its opposite ends to the cross-bars of the frame, the adjustable bar E, having the longitudinal elongated slot a therein, the bolt secured to the bridge-bar and passing through the slot in the adjust able bar, a nut on said bolt for holding said bar E in its adjustable relation to the bridgesite longitudinal edge to the slotted adjust bar, the set-screws passing through the adable bar, substantially as specified.
justable bar and adapted to bear against the In testimony whereof I affix my signature in bridge-bar, so as to separate the same, and presence of two witnesses.
the slats pivotally connected at opposite ends JOHN OBRIAN. near one longitudinal edge to the main frame Witnesses:
and bridge-bar, respectively, and pivotal] y H. S. LEMON,
connected at their inner end near the oppo- A. A. HOBKERK.
