FOLDING KEY-BOARD FOR ORGANS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 469,242, dated February 23, 1892.

Be it known that I, FREDERICK W. HEDGE- LAND, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State,
of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Folding Key-Boards for Organs, of which the following is a specification.
A folding key-board has been heretofore devised and made by me, and with it a section of the case-front above the stops has been hinged in such manner as to adapt it to move out of the way of thestops when the board is folded up. As the parts have been constructed and arranged, the hinged section of the case has been made to yield when the key-board is closed into or against the case and give room to the knobs or pulls of the stops and the stop-board by power received from the stop-board, the latter swinging with the key-board in the folding movement. As heretofore constructed and arranged, the stopknobs have caused difficulty in the folding and unfolding movements by scratching or marring the hinged portion of the case, which they are very liable to do, especially if any of them stand out of line and do not, when pushed in, occupy their proper positions. To obviate these objections, I place a circular guard upon the stop-board, which projects outwardly a sufficient distance to enable it to lift the hinged front and prevent all contact between it and the draw-stops. This guard being circular in its outline creates no perceptible amount of friction and obviates the scratching and marring referred to.
In the drawings I have shown at Figure 1 a section of an organ having a folding keyboard, to which my invention has been ap plied, showing the key-board lowered for use; and at Fig. 2, a like section showing the keyboard folded up.
In said drawings, A represents the keys of the manual, B the front board, and O a bottom board, the same constituting the keyboard of the instrument and hinged to the case at 0. Above the keys A is the stop-board D, in whichare the draw-stops D, (only one of several being shown,) provided with pulls or knobs d; The parts all fold up and open simultaneously, though the stop-board turns upon a different center from the key-board, its axis being upon the line of the pivot of the joint d in the stop D. Above the stopboard is the hinged front E, forming a part of the front of the case. .It is supported upon a hinged joint 6 so it may swing up and inward and make room for the stop-board, as shown at Fig. 2, the bottom board 0 then forming a surface flush with the adjoining portions of the case.
To avoid the mar-ring of the front E by the pulls d, as Well as by other parts of the stopboard, I apply to the stop-board a circular guard F, which may be conveniently made of wire, and the circular plane of which is outside of the plane of the pulls, as clearly illustrated. This guard may be applied to the st0p-b0ard at one end, so that it will not interfere with the player in his use of the stops. It operates to lift the falling front section when the key and stop boards are raised and holds said section up so that there is no contact with it by the stops or other portions of the folding boards.

I- have shown in the drawings an octavecoupling mechanism adapted to be used with my folding key-board; but I lay no claim to the same in this application, as I purpose filing another application immediately to protect myinterest in such coupling mechanism.
1. The combination, with the folding stopboard and the hinged case-section, of a guard adapted to lift the case section when the board is folded and prevent interference with the stops, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the folding key and stop boards, of a hinged case-section E and a guard F, carried by said boards and acting to lift said case-section when said boards are folded, substantially as specified.
