COLLAR-PAD.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 468,230, dated February 2, 1892. Application filed April 21,- 1890. Serial No. 348,754. (No model.)

Be it known that I, ADAM SCOTT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wilmington, 1n the county of Clinton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Collar-Pad, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has relation to improvements in combined collar and sweat pads; and the objects in vieware to provide a pad made of a single piece adapted to serve the functions of a sweat and collar pad, thereby avoiding the necessity of the employment of a separate collar-pad and a separate sweat-pad, and to provide means forpreventing the chafing of the neck of the horse by reason of. the vibrations of the hame-strap thereupon, as caused by the weight and motion of the tongues of heavy machinery, such as mowers and reapers.

With the above main and other minor obj ects in view the invention consists in certain features of construction hereinafter specified, and particularly pointed out in the claims. Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective of a collar-pad constructed in accordance with my invention, the same being Fig. 2 is a perspective in detail of the combined collar and sweat pad. Fig. 3 is a transverse section through the same.

Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.

In practicing my invention I construct the collar-pad and sweat-pad 1 in a continuous single piece and of the usual form, the same consisting of the central arched portion 2 and the opposite curved terminals or sweat-pad portions 3, of the usual shape.

The stuffing of-the pad is continued through- .out both the collar and sweat-pads; but the quilting of the pad terminates short of the collar-pad.

The arched or collar-pad portion 2 is formed by a lateral enlargement of the material composing the pads and is provided with a central opening 4: for the purpose of permitting the circulation of air under the same and access to the neck of the horse, whereby any sore or chafed place thereupon, may be properly treated without removing the pad or without doing further injury thereto.

It will be noticed that the collar-pad porcurved plate 5, secured in any suitable man ner to the collar-pad and preferably formed of zinc in sheet form. The opposite sides of the plate bear upon the opposite sidesof the neck of the horse, so that the ridge of the neck is not rubbed or chafed by any slight movements of the collar. The plate is also provided with a central opening 6, which registers with the opening 4: in the collar-pad, and the opposite ends of said plate are slightly upturned,as shown, the sides being left plain, so as to offer no obstruction to the sections of the collar and hame hereinafter mentioned. A bridge "7, of inverted-U shape, straddles the opening 6 of the plate, the terminals of the bridge being oppositely bent and perforated to form securing-plates 8, through which and the plate 5 are passed rivets 9. The upper central portion of the bridge has riveted thereto, as at 10, a U-shaped loop 11, and below said loop, upon a cross-bar 12, the terminals of which are bent, as at 13, and riveted to the terminals of the bridge, there is riveted, as at 14, a second lower loop 15. The width of the loop 15 is such as to trisect the crossbar 12, forming two outer loops 16.

From the above construction it will be apparent that the straps of the collar and hames are supported above the horses neck and can in no way act to rub. or chafe the same and that the movements of the tongue as they afiect the hames and collar are compensated for and the, weight and strain distributed upon the opposite sides of the neck; also, that a thorough ventilation of the neck is accorded and any sores or chafed places thereon may be freely treated without removing any portion of the harness.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. The combination, with a pad, of the plate 5 and the bridge 7, mounted on the pad and provided with the upper loop 10 and the lower series of loops 14, 15, and 16, substantially as described.

2. The combination, with a pad, of a curved plate secured thereto, an inverted-U-shaped bridge mounted on the plate and having its terminals connected by a lower transverse cross-bar, an open loop located upon the upper portion of the bridge, and a lower U- shaped loop located upon the cross-bar and of a size to trisect the same and form opposite end loops, the upper loop being designed for the reception of the hame-connecting strap and the lower loops for either a single or double collar-connecting strap, substantially as specified.

3. Thecombinatiomwithapad,ofthecurved plate secured thereto and provided with a central opening registering with a similar opening in the pad, an inverted-U-shaped bridge straddling the opening formed in the pad and provided with a transverse cross-bar connecting the terminals above the opening, an open loop located upon the top of the bridge, and a lower loop located upon the cross-bar and forming a series of strap-passages or loops, substantially asspecified.
