HORACE B. CAMP, OF CUYAHOGA FALLS,.OH IO.
APPARATUS FOR LAYING UNDERGROUND CONDUITS FOR ELECTRIC WIRES.
I SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 467,650, dated January 26,1892.
Application filed October 31,1891. Serial No. 410,496. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HORACE B. CAMP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Guyahoga Falls, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Apparatus for Laying Underground Conduits for Electric Z-Yires, of which the following is a specificaion.
My invention has relation to improvements in appliances for laying underground condnitsfor electric wires, in which the conduit consists of hollow tile, having one or more longitudinal openings, laid in lengthwise parallel courses, with the ends of the sections of each course arranged to register.
lleretofore it has beencustomary to string. or place in longitudinal. succession the sections of tile, as the work progressed, on a wire or equivalent device connected with a mandrel arranged to be drawn forward through the tile-sections as they were successively placed in line, but no provision was made for removing the cementthat might be forced inward as these sections were pressed together.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved appliance for directing the meeting of the ends of adjacent sections of tile in their respective courses, and which shall be arranged to be drawn forward as the work progresses and simultaneously wipe away the exuding portions of. cement that may find its way through to the joint, so as to leave the interior of the conduit free from obstructions that may interfere with the passage of the wires therethrough.
To the before-mentionedbbject my invention consists in the peculiar and novel appliance hereinafter described, and then specifically pointed out in the claim, reference being had to the. accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
In the accompanying drawings, in which similar reference-numerals indicate like parts in bothviews, Figure 1 is a perspective View of aportion of an underground conduit of the class designated in process of construct1on,a
portion of one section being broken away,
loosely fit and slide, which mandrel is in cross-section slightly less than the internal cross-section of the tile-sections, exceeds them in length, and bears at. one end, which for the purpose of this specification is called the.
front,a handle or loop 3, by which it may be drawn forward, and at the back a projecting rim 4, of rubber or other pliable material.
In operation one of the mandrels is placed in the first section of each course and. the other sections added until they equal or extend beyond the length of the mandrel, when it is reached and drawn forward by hand or by a hooked rod, thereby subserving the twofold purpose of retaining the course in a true line and wiping the interior from any exuding cement as it is drawn forward.
I claim as my invention- An appliance for laying underground conduits for electric wires, wherein the conduit is composed of a number of tube-sections laid in parallel courses, with the ends of adjacent sections meeting, consisting of a mandrel arranged to slide in said sections and provided atone end with a handle and at the opposite end with a projecting flexible flange arranged to wipe the interior of said sections as it is drawn forward, substantially as shown .and described. g, i
In testimony that I claim the above I hereunto set my hand.
HORACE B. CAMP. In presence of- G. E. HUMPHREY, C. P. I'IUMPHREY.
