\VILLIAM SPEIRS SIMPSON, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
VENDING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 467,442, dated January 19, 1892.
A h ti fil d August 6, 1891. Serial No. 401,919- (No model.) Patented in England January 2, 1891,
No.107; in France May 19, 1891, No. 213,554; in Belgium May 19, 1891, No. 94,941, and in Italy August 10, 1891, xxv, 30,251, and LIX, 278.
T0 ctZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM SPEIRS SIMP- SON, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at 4:9 Battersea Park Road, London, in the county of Surrey, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vending Apparatus, (for which I have obtained patents in Great Britain, No. 107, dated January 2,1891; in France, No. 213,554, dated May 19, 1891; in Belgium, No. 94,941, dated May 19, 1891, and in Italy, Vol. XXV, No. 30,251 and Vol. LIX, No. 278, dated August 10, 1891,) of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention has for its object to provide novel means for arranging a book of fairy tales, or a novel, or a game, or other article in a locked casing, so that on the insertion of a coin and the movement of a lever the door or lid of the casing is released and the book or other article can be removed.
To accomplish this object my invention in volves the features of construction and the combination or arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a rear elevation of the casing, the hinged back being omitted. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same, showing the casing in its closed position; and Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the casing in its open position and the book or article removed therefrom.
In order to enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now describe the same in detail, referring to the drawings, where it will be seen that the easing comprises the side walls a h and the end walls 0 cl. The back f of the casing is hinged at one end, as at g, to the top wall 0, so that such back can open outward for gaining access to the coin box or receptacle.
carries a coin-chute w, so arranged as to dehinged back f is in its closed position. The movable lid or cover 25 of the casing is pivoted at its lower end, as at i, and at its upper end is provided with a suitable catch-plate 71/.
The cas-. ing is divided by a vertical partition e, which This cover is adapted to receive the book or other article which is to be locked in the casing.
In the upper portion of the casing, at apoint in rear of the partition 6, is arranged a shaft or axle 19, carrying a rocking yoke or frame 19, suitably provided with a pawl q and having at one end a hooked catch 0, projecting through the partition eand adapted to engage and disengage the catch-plate u of the lid or cover 6. The rocking yoke or frame q is held in position for the engagement of the hooked catch r with the catch-plate a through the medium of a suitable spring .9, which, as shown, encircles the shaft or axle p and has one end arranged to bear against the rocking yoke or frame q, while the other end is secured to the side I) of the casing. The lever h is pivoted at its lower end to the partition 6 at the rear thereof, and its opposite end projects through the casing and is provided with a suitable finger piece or handle m. The lever is provided with a wing and a lateral projection j for the purpose of bearing against and moving a coin, which is inserted into the casing through a suitable coin-slot therein, so that such coin will fall upon an inclined rest-plate Z in such manner that when the lever h is swung, as indicated by dotted lines, Fig. 1, the coin is caused to act on the pawl q, projecting from the yoke or frame q, thereby rocking the latter for the purpose of releasing the hooked catch 1' from the catchplate to to release the lid or cover if and enable the hook or other article to be removed.
In order to automatically swing the lid or cover to its open position, Fig. 3, I provide the partition 6 with a pivoted arm '0, having a tail-piece, which is acted upon by a spring 0', secured to the partition in such manner that when a book or other article is arranged in the lid or cover and the latter is closed the arm n will be forced into the position indicated in Fig. 2, thereby placing the spring.
0 under tension, so that when the lid or cover is released from the hooked catch the power of the spring will tend to move the arm 2: into an approximately horizontal position to force the lid or cover into its open position, as in Fig. 3. The lever 7b is held in its normal position through the medium of a spring moonnected at one end to the partition 6 and at its opposite end to the lever.
The yoke or frame q is formed with a depression y to provide an elevation 1 which is substantially parallel with the top wall of the casing, and to the lever h is pivoted an arm y, which, in the normal position of the lever it, rests between the elevation 1 and the top wall 0 of the casing for the purpose of locking the yoke or frame q against a rocking motion, When, however, a coin is inserted into the casing and rests upon the plateland the lever h is moved, as indicated by dotted lines, Fig. 1, the arm y will pass into the depression y of the yoke or frame q, so thatthecoin can act onthepawl q for rocking theyokeorframe and causing thecatchrto release the lid or cover 6. The coin which is moved from the rest-plate Z by the lever It falls n o he w ngu w an s dep te n! the QQ nbQ Q1: e ept c e T heco lot ndicated; y d ine a, Fig. 1'); maybe constructed andarranged in trant Qfi. t e asin uit b e o e-coir ditioe sqn -n di t y e ng ent al tha he n ert d c in w l v pass to and be supp ntedby he e t-p at Z op e e e o n in n e er-pe tion t eached: on y t e a e -e1 Pt inQ iO Mfi e ever h h the att s operated.

2. The combination of a casing having a coin-slot and an opening and closing lid, a partition arranged in the casing and having a spring-impelled arm for automatically opening the lid, a rocking yoke or frame having a pawl to be engaged by a coin and a catch to engage and lock the lid in its closed position,
a rest-plate by which the coin is temporarily supported, and a lever pivoted to the partition extending from the casing and having a lateral projectionto, move the coin. and cause t feast o t e. p w i m k s they e or frame; to release the catch from engagement with the lid, substantially as described.
3. The combination of a casing. having a coin-slot a an wning a dc s nsi di rocking, yoke/onframe having a pawl, to be engagedby a coin, and a; catch to engageand lock the lid in its closed position, a rest by which the coin is temporarily supported, a pivoted lever extending from the-casing and having a projecting part to move the coin and cause it to act on the pawl for rocking; the yoke or frame torelease. thecatch from engagement with the lid, and,a lockingarmconnected; with theilever for holdingv the-yoke or frame rigid when the lever is. in itsnormal position, substantially asldescrihed.
